In 2014 I was a CrossFit affiliate gym owner.
I could lift a lot of weight, I could do “Fran” in 2 minutes, but anything over 10 minutes crushed me.

Something was missing something and I needed to find the answer.

A friend of mine and fellow affiliate owner in the area who had insanely well-conditioned athletes told me to buy a book called Ultimate MMA Conditioning by .

He had been using the methods in that book to train his athletes which funny enough, they couldn’t touch my team’s strength numbers— but they destroyed us in CrossFit open workouts.

I wondered what the heck he was doing, as surely this wasn’t because of all the conditioning.

I started using the methods in the book and a little over a year later we ended up selling our gym.

Fast forward to 18’, I decided to hop into the CrossFit Open that year ‘just for fun.’ I placed highest I had ever placed in any of the 10 previous Opens I competed in, which was interesting because at this point I had stopped doing CrossFit specific workouts for close to 2 years.

The change to my programming was the inclusion of zone 2 conditioning on weekly basis, roughly 2 hours of total work per week.

I performed better (I also hit several lifetime PRs on my power clean, jerk from rack, and front squat)

I had more energy for my training sessions (my recovery saw a major boost)

Aerobic conditioning is the key to unlock all the gains you’ve been seeking.

Doing more will work until it doesn’t.

Someone with a specific goal trains to peak. Let’s call that 100%.

I train to scare my daughters’ boyfriends in 10 years so I train more for peak sustainability, or the highest I can maintain year-round of strength, conditioning, performance and physique.

Let’s call that 90%.

So how do we maintain 90% when science tells us more volume = diminishing returns?
Optimal programming.

For me that means a concurrent training split, optimal exercise selection, exercise order, sets, reps, rest, and understanding when to auto regulate.

This simple concept has allowed me to build a million dollar brand based on results, authenticity, and trust.

You have a sugar addiction” is what my wife said to me three months ago.

I shrugged it off. I’ve never had an addiction in my life.

But then I started to think more about it.

I did have a lot of addiction tendencies when it came to sweets…

…thinking about sweets all the time
…full binges
…a ‘throw in the towel’ mentality where if I had the slightest cheat I’d just keep going

I struggled the most with my weekend eating because the weekend means pancakes and chocolate chip cookies are on the menu for the kids (read: for them and me)….and I don’t have a couple like a normal person, more like an entire tray.

Jesus, I do have a sugar addiction!

So…I decided this would be the year I’d crack down and start holding myself accountable.

Wanting to lose some extra mass and lean up wasn’t going to come by way of giving into my sugar problems so I committed myself to giving it up but used some strategies to help make it more tolerable (insert Ninja Cremi protein ice cream)

And while the addition isn’t completely gone it’s fully under my control now.

My bodyweight is down 185 from 195 and I’m happy to report I’m finally back to being as lean as I was in my 20s.

No one is impervious to struggles with health. But often the hardest part is being honest and making the next decision to change.

More is not better.

Conjugate X Conditioning Programming ⁣⁣⬇️

Any of you that know me know that I’ve used with literally hundreds of thousands of people - when I was programming for boxes we had 30k people using the programming daily!

A lot has changed since then, but the core principle still remain intact.

This is an unreal way to train for anyone with a CrossFit background.

One additional programming note: Max effort work does show every 12-16 weeks.

The clients I work with are almost all Type A (most are former athletes) that have no problem pushing themselves to the limits, which comes with its own challenges— but removing volume is usually the catalyst for new gains.

Personality type is always an important consideration and should be taken into account when determining the correct approach.

More isn’t better. Better is better. Agree? Disagree?

The Memorial Day Murph Experience In honor of Lieutenant Michael Murphy, it’s time to rep out our yearly tradition. Instead of trying to go “all-in” being mindful of scaling, pacing, and NOT worrying about you...

The reality is that most people are chronically stressed out and oftentimes their training just provides more stress. It shouldn’t be that way (all this talk about overtraining not being possible might be true, but when you factor in outside of the gym stress, that’s a different story.)

Improve your ability to recover FIRST and watch your life improve.⁣

Put the same level of attention and effort into your conditioning as you do your strength & hypertrophy work.⁣

Better aerobic fitness you have a greater ability to bring more oxygen and nutrients to muscles.⁣⁣

Recovery & repair need oxygen and nutrients to fuel that process. Someone who has more capillaries can cover more ground faster & 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. ⁣⁣

And it doesn’t have to be boring either.⁣

Programming school is in session 🤓✏️⁣

Type 1 and Type 2 fibers have very different applications within the body so they need to be trained a bit differently. ⁣

We know that there are muscle groups in the body primarily composed of one type, while others are composed of another— having a basic level of understanding of which muscle fiber type predominates in which muscle or muscle group can play a part to improving your programming allowing you to program better sets, reps, and rest intervals.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

For seasoned athletes, getting past the “I have to do 5 or 6 sessions per week” mindset is usually the hardest part of following this advice.

But it’s worth the try.

If your boss said to you today ‘hey you can do less work and make more money, whaddya think?’, you’d say yes in a heartbeat. Training is no different. There’s a point of diminishing returns and more isn’t better, especially as our training age grows.

Have you tried this approach yet? If not, will you? Let me know below!

➡️Loaded carries can be used in both strength & conditioning scenarios – the former will be used for shorter distances with heavier loads and the latter will be used for longer distances with lighter loads.⁣

📈You can constantly change how these are performed by adding things like a pulling sled to the mix⁣

⚒️Longer distance carries should be done on a conditioning day whereas as heavier work can be done as a “finisher” on a strength-emphasis day⁣

🎮Use your imagination and “gamify” these finishers – 1/2 mile farmer carry for time is an example.⁣

I lost the drive to push myself to be better in every single session.
