Meenakshi Raghavan, an 82-year-old martial arts master known as "Sword Granny," is dedicated to empowering the next generation through the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu. Operating from her school in Kerala, Raghavan trains over 200 students, predominantly girls, in this traditional discipline, which she believes is crucial for self-defense in a society where crimes against women are rising. Despite her age, Raghavan's swift and graceful swordsmanship inspires her students, instilling in them physical prowess, mental resilience, and self-confidence. Her school, founded by her late husband in 1949, continues to offer free training to all, with a focus on equipping young women with essential self-defense skills. Caroline Thomas, an 81-year-old with a lifelong sense of adventure, has spent the past 40 years volunteering with the Casualties Union, a charity that simulates realistic emergency scenarios to help train first responders. Her journey began when she took a first-aid course in Cape Town and later volunteered with St John Ambulance in London. Intrigued by the idea of playing the role of a casualty in emergency drills, she quickly became involved in more advanced training exercises. Over the years, Caroline has simulated countless life-threatening injuries, from being shot and stabbed to being rescued from burning ships and car wrecks.

Despite the intensity of these drills, Caroline finds the work incredibly rewarding and believes it’s crucial for emergency services to train in realistic scenarios. Her dedication has made her a senior instructor, allowing her to pass on her experience to new recruits. Caroline's passion for her volunteer work keeps her feeling young, and she plans to continue her role well into her later years, preferring the thrill of training exercises over more traditional pastimes.

In September 2022, Right at Home Portland, ME, welcomed Katie Neuguth as one of their first employees, and she quickly became the embodiment of the Right at Home brand. With a strong background in Community Relations within assisted living, Katie's dedication to senior care was unparalleled. Her passion for making a difference led her to champion Parkinson’s awareness, inspired by Right at Home's involvement with the Parkinson’s Foundation Moving Day in Boston. Katie took the lead in bringing Moving Day to Maine, establishing the first event in Payson Park for June 1, 2024. She tirelessly built a committee, selected the location, and raised awareness throughout Maine’s senior care community.

Tragically, Katie passed away in March 2024, leaving Moving Day as her enduring legacy. The Right at Home Greater Portland team honored her by stepping into her role on the committee, ensuring the event's success, and surpassing fundraising goals. Moving Day now stands as a lasting tribute to Katie's unwavering dedication and impact. As we remember Katie, we extend our deepest gratitude for her caring heart and her tireless efforts to improve the lives of others.

At Right at Home, our core values are more than just words; they guide everything we do. That’s why we created the RAH-k Stars program, where colleagues recognize each other for living these values every day. At age 106, Alfred “Al” Blaschke reclaimed the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to tandem skydive, proving that age is just a number and that "everyone is more capable than they think." Blaschke, a resident of Georgetown, Texas, first broke this record at 103 in 2020 and reached an altitude of 9,000ft in November 2023 to reclaim his title. His latest jump was inspired by the record-setting skydive of 104-year-old Dorothy Hoffner, who passed away shortly after her jump. Blaschke's skydiving journey, which began at 100, celebrates significant milestones in his life, including his grandsons' college graduation. Born in 1917, Blaschke worked in the tool-and-die industry, contributing to aircraft manufacturing during WWII, and retired in 1982. His skydiving endeavors highlight his belief in seizing opportunities and challenging personal limits.

Al said to the press in attendance: “If you think you can’t, you’re just underestimating yourself. Everyone is more capable than they think. They just need to make the decision to try.”

When Caeli from the corporate office stopped by with a Joy for All Companion Pets companion cat, Miranda, the Quality Assurance Manager at Right at Home Omaha, NE, immediately thought of a specific client. Miranda had been discussing the client's progressing dementia with their son and wondered if the comforting cat might bring some joy to them. Their son thought it was a wonderful idea, so Miranda gifted the cat to the client.

The reaction was heartwarming. Their face lit up as they held the cat, exclaiming, "Oh! Is this your cat?" When Miranda told them it was theirs, they were overjoyed, hugging the cat and saying, "Oh, I love you. You are sleeping with me tonight!" This simple act brought immense happiness to the client, and Miranda's thoughtful gesture exemplified the mission of Right at Home. Kudos to Miranda for recognizing the opportunity to enhance their quality of life with such a meaningful gift.

Join us in congratulating Virginia!

Eighty-three years after pausing her master’s program at Stanford University to marry during World War II, 105-year-old Virginia “Ginger” Hislop has finally earned her degree, showcasing that it's never too late for education. Hislop began her academic journey in 1936 at Stanford University School of Education, graduated with a bachelor’s in 1940, and then started her master’s program. However, she left before completing her thesis when her then-boyfriend, George Hislop, was called to serve in the war, leading the couple to marry. Despite not finishing her degree, Hislop pursued a successful career in Washington state politics, contributing significantly to education through various board roles, including helping to start Heritage University.

Recently, Hislop’s son-in-law discovered that Stanford had dropped the thesis requirement, meaning she had all the credits needed to graduate. On June 16, Hislop received her master of arts in education as the lone member of the class of 1940, met with a standing ovation from her family and fellow graduates. Reflecting on the moment, Hislop expressed her joy and the long wait for this achievement, saying, “My goodness. I’ve waited a long time for this.”
