As a licensed occupational therapist, Katie is passionate about somatic healing, neuroplasticity, and sensory integration, so if that's your jam, Katie would love to geek out with you about it! With Katie, you get the best of both worlds: catch her either on Fridays at 4:30 pm for a power flow, or on Sundays at 6 pm for a slow, restorative practice.

Calling all bookworms! 📚🪱

We're starting a book club! This is a group that will meet at the studio on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:30–8:30 pm to discuss books related to yoga, health, wellness, and mindfulness. The first gathering on September 11 will simply be an interest meeting to go over the format and details of the club. Discussion led by Sarah Ellis.

Each month, the group will have a structured discussion around the chosen book, enjoy potluck refreshments, and engage in a short activity inspired by the given book, such as a themed meditation or breathing exercise. At the end of each meeting, the group will vote on the next book.

This group is for anyone who has a goal to read more, who enjoys chatting about books, or who simply wants to get to know more people at the studio around a shared interest. This is an inclusive space for people to share different thoughts and perspectives, come together around a common goal, and ultimately encourage and support one another.

Meetings are free, and participants are expected to procure their own copies of the chosen book. Have suggestions for a book? Drop them below! 👇

Today is National Nonprofit Day!

August 17 recognizes the positive impact nonprofits have on their communities and the world. The observance encourages you to take some time to learn more about nonprofits and give if you're able. At Small World Yoga, donations make up 45% of our total revenue—gifts from our community are crucial to the continuation of our organization and the fulfillment of our mission to bring yoga to all.

This month, a generous community member is matching donations up to $10,000! When you support Small World Yoga this month, your gift will be doubled!

If you've been wanting to donate to Small World Yoga, August is the time to do it! Your money goes twice as far toward getting someone on a yoga mat who otherwise might not have access to this life-changing practice.

Giving to SWY helps sustain our ongoing outreach programming in Middle Tennessee and beyond, providing free yoga and meditation to over 3,500 students monthly at 80+ community partner locations. It also helps support our daily operations, teacher continuing education, forging new partnerships, and community building events.

Photos from Small World Yoga's post 08/15/2024

Liz recently wrote a few words reflecting on ten years of Small World Yoga, on staying present, taking risks, and looking ahead:

In yoga, we’re often invited to stay in the present moment—to notice our breath, for example, in child’s pose. But about twenty minutes later, we’re asked to look ahead in crow pose, to grow and change, to make goals and take risks. How do we reconcile these two ideas, particularly when it comes to stepping off our mats?

The reminder to be present is so needed in our fast-paced society. We are hyper-focused on what’s next, rarely pausing to appreciate where we are and how far we’ve come. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of growth and what’s next, even in yoga. (After all, growth is one of our core values at Small World Yoga.)

And yet, setting our sights ahead or aligning to something bigger, sometimes what we call our “true north” in yoga, has positive attributes, too. I can think of phases in both my professional and personal life where that “look to the finish line” mentality has been crucial to my success, and most importantly, to my happiness.

Gabby's last class at our studio is Wednesday, August 21 at 6 pm! 🥹

Gabby DeLorenze is moving to Connecticut at the end of the month, and so her last class at our community studio is next Wednesday. We're sad to see her go, but we're so excited for this next phase of life with her growing family, and we feel a little better knowing she's sure to visit us in the future!

We are so grateful for Gabby's insight and knowledge that she's shared with our teacher training groups over the years. She's been an integral part of our community, and we need your help giving her a proper send-off. There are two more opportunities to practice with her before the big move!

Happy Monday! We can't wait to see y'all in the studio this week! 🥰

🐠Favorite yoga pose lately?
Supported fish pose.

😅What can people expect in your class?
To work, sweat, and be playful! I love to add in fun challenging flows and balance that with some nice time to cool down and just be at the end of class.

⏰When do you like to practice at the studio?
I practice at the studio mostly on weekends. You can find me in a Saturday or Sunday morning class for sure!

📺Favorite music or TV series lately?
My favorite music is truly all the above! If you come to my class you will definitely see this with my class playlist every Sunday morning at 9 am and Tuesday nights at 6 pm. My favorite TV series right now is Fallout!

🎨What’s a hobby you enjoy outside of yoga?
Outside of yoga I like hiking and being outside as well as painting.

Yoga at Small World isn't just about movement—it's about connection. To ourselves, to each other, to something bigger than any one of us. 🤝

That idea is being exemplified beautifully here by our Summer 2024 teacher training graduates!

Our next breathwork session is this month!

🧘Transformational Breathwork Journey🫁
Sunday, August 25
5–7 pm

In this session, you will be invited to contemplate where your edge of comfort is and if it’s still supporting the vision of your ideal lived experiences. Breathwork is an incredible field to reveal, feel, and release so you may more readily embody your most radiant truths, be that through setting boundaries, taking risks, or living through your unique expression in full view.

This month we will also be incorporating a few restorative yoga poses before and after breathwork to encourage the meditative theta brain state where the subconscious mind is even more available to rewiring and intentional influence.

As always, the suggestions of intention made by Alexandra are simply that, and you are free to practice without expectations or energetic focus, however you deem best.

What to expect:
Meditation, breathwork, journaling, light refreshments and group sharing.

Cost:
$35
$20 Active SWY teachers
