A Top Hospital for Neurosurgery in the World, #1 in NY, Third Year in a Row! | Brain & Spine Center Since Newsweek and Statista started ranking specialized hospitals in 2021, the neurosurgery service at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University has been at the top of the list. I was so proud to have been a part of this amazing course!
Congratulations!
From all of us at the Weill Cornell Medicine Brain and Spine Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, best wishes for a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year!
This issue of our department newsletter is focused on what we
have to be thankful for in neurosurgery—research grants that will help us find new solutions for difficult neurosurgical conditions; fellowship programs that will allow us to train the neurosurgeons of the future; and even our newfound ability to reach patients, students, and colleagues alike via remote videoconferencing and telemedicine.
From Dr Stieg: I would not have guessed back in March 2020 that I would one day be grateful for telemedicine! Remembering the difficulties in making that swift pivot, I am truly grateful today to have the tools available that allow us to consult with patients and confer with colleagues nearly anywhere in the world. A New Lease on Life: A Patient Story Alain Suissa wasn’t terribly surprised to wake up with a headache one Saturday morning in 2013. After all, the 57-year-old New Yorker had been out with friends the night before and had had a couple of drinks. “I thought it was the cheap vodka,” he says, “so I took a couple of Advil and waite...

Remembering this story of Hannah Bonham, who we treated for arteriovenous malformation—an abnormal tangle of blood vessels that can occur anywhere in the body.
Geography Is No Limitation Hannah Bonham was tired of being sick. For more than six months the young woman had been treated, retreated, and retreated again for an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), to no avail. In fact she’d gotten worse, as one procedure had resulted in a stroke that caused partial paralysis. In short, Hann...

This is Your Brain With Dr. Phil Stieg
My mentor, Dr. Philip Stieg's podcast, , premiered its second season today. Give it a listen!
After the shocking 2011 shooting that sent a would-be assassin’s bullet through her brain, former U.S. Rep. Giffords had to re-learn how to breathe, walk, and talk. In the Season 2 premiere episode of This Is Your Brain, Dr. Stieg talks with neurologic music therapist Maegan Morrow, whose innovative techniques helped Giffords “rewire” her brain and regain her voice. Bonus: Special appearance by Ms. Giffords herself.
Dr. Phil Stieg
As the year draws to a close, I remember appearing on Dr. Philip Stieg's podcast with my patient Mikal Scott, who experienced a brain bleed. I performed a pioneering technique that provides better outcomes and treatment for patients in the same situation. You can listen to that episode below.

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) can put patients at risk for a brain hemorrhage in the future.
