With 4SoberChicks – I just got recognized as one of their top fans! 🎉

05/10/2024

4SoberChicks invited me to their podcast to talk about how women’s experience of recovery is different and we also talked about how diagnoses of are often missed in women and how treating ADHD can be an important part of recovery. It’s great to have in depth conversations about these important topics!

I have ADHD and I’ve had it my whole life however, I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 45. I couldn’t understand why after 3+yrs without alcohol, extensive trauma work, and a comprehensive recovery program I didn’t feel better emotionally. I didn’t feel at peace, that’s the only way I can describe it. My mind was constantly running, I had a 1000 unfinished projects, and I struggled with emotional regulation. Without alcohol in my system I was no longer able to mask my symptoms. My diagnosis has provided a great deal of relief for me. Understanding that my brain works differently…… and there are things that can help me…..was huge!

Rhett Miller posted this on his page. I love the message, and wanted to share it with the Wholeview community. His honesty both about his struggle and about how he is now experiencing recovery is inspiring. Congratulations on 8 years Rhett!

On July 11, 2015 I took my last drink. I've never regretted it.

I'd always assumed that folks who'd "had to get sober" had done so as a last resort, and that they now lived sad half-lives. After I'd made it to the other side myself I realized that the only half-life was the one I'd been living. Barely there, not there at all, or physically there but cranky, angry, short-tempered and defensive.

I can't believe I survived the years between 13 and 44. God knows I almost died a thousand times. Driving when I shouldn't have, wandering strange dark streets while wasted, pouring poison (triple on the rocks in a pint glass) down my throat on a nightly/hourly schedule...

That I was fun, that all this self-destruction was a party, that was just a story I told myself.

I told myself so many stories.

I told myself that I would never be able to quit. And I believed it.

But. But!

On Sunday, April 5, 2015 having flown back on the last flight from Chicago after a radio station gig, I found myself drunken and defensive about missing Easter. As I fumed in bed, filled with venom, a thought cut through the fog. I had an epiphany. I didn't want to live like this anymore.

It wasn't easy, but it wasn't, it turned out, impossible. Between April and July, it was more of an experiment than anything else. Weeks without drinking and then a night out on the town, wondering inevitably, "Is this fun? Am I having fun?" And I decided I wasn't.

Meetings helped, though I didn't faithfully "work the program." My path was more solitary. And though I recognize that a self-guided sobriety wouldn't suffice for everyone, it worked for me.

My therapist Lois was a great resource. Sober friends proved invaluable. And there were more of them than I'd ever realized.

And time did its healing, just like they say. As the booze receded into my past, I was able to recognize the insidiousness with which it had tricked me into believing that I needed it, that it was awesome, that it was harmless.

And then came the clarity. That's the biggest selling-point sobriety has to offer. It isn't the lack of bad things in your life, it's the absolute gift that is the newfound clarity in your life. Imagine living your first four decades with sub-20/20 vision and then some roving optometrist hands you a pair of glasses.

I felt better in my body, mind and soul. And I have continued to feel better ever since. Eight years of clarity. Eight years of modeling healthy living for my kids. I've still been able to write songs. I've had fun. And laughs. I've felt joy. So much joy. I've even been able to address the issues that had me on the run from myself for all those years. I'm not perfect but I'm better. Every day.

If you wonder about sobriety, and maybe you believe yourself incapable of finding your way to the other side, please hear me when I say: It's worth it! And you can do it!

If you're in a place where you need a tug towards a brighter future, please let this note be an outstretched hand offering to help you find the way. It's glorious over here. You'll love it.
