Dr. Susan Cucchiara
Dr. Susan Cucchiara is a Naturopathic Doctor whom is trained as a primary care physician and is an e
GI issues are so incredibly common with symptomatic hypermobility conditions such as EDS/HSD.
We need more research to determine the exact prevalence, but some small studies have found as many as 87% of those with hEDS struggle with GI symptoms.
In fact, for me .melissakoehl.pt this was the area I struggled the hardest with in my health journey and is why I’m so excited to collaborate with Dr. Susan Cucchiara, ND .susanc on this post!
Working with skilled providers that understand the complexity of connective tissue disorders AND functional GI conditions can be so incredibly helpful.
However, access to these people isn’t always easy. But thankfully there are several self care strategies we can do to best support our digestion.
Gut motility, including the clean up waves of the migrating motor complex (MMC) is often impaired in EDS/HSD and if I had known that years ago it would have been a huge game changer!
For example ginger lemon tea is one of my all time favorite drinks, and using ginger in food, juices, smoothies etc can be one simple way to help support that gut motility.
Have you found any self care strategies that support your digestion?

From Dr. Melissa Koehl PT .melissakoehl.pt
I’m so trilled to collaborate on this post with .susanc because one of the things that has been significantly helpful in my health journey is working with a good Naturopathic Doctor.
The Ehlers Danlos Syndromes (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) affects connective tissue that can be found pretty much everywhere in the body (skin, bone, cartilage: tendons, ligaments, fascia and more).
It’s a whole body systemic issue that the current medical system that is highly focused on specialties, is sometimes not well suited to address.
Many of us, myself included, go to providers for years and struggle to find answers to fatigue, brain fog, GI issue, dizziness, and more.
Adding an ND onto my care team was something I was reluctant to do at first because I had the (incorrect) perception that the only advice I might get would be to “eat healthy” and “hydrate” or to be sold a bunch of expensive supplements I don’t need.
It can feel a little bit like stepping out into the wild west when looking for some help outside of the standard medical model of health care. And you are right to be cautious and do your research here!
But, when working with someone reputable, you’ll see the approach is tailored to your needs, which while may involve supplements, I found this ultimately saved me $ in the long run because I was only buying high quality supplements that based on testing, were what I actually needed, instead of just randomly throwing supplements at my health issues and seeing what worked.
Another thing that can give you more confidence in working with a Naturopathic Doctor is understanding the extraordinarily high level of education they have, especially in regards to treating the body as a whole, and understanding the role of lifestyle, diet, nutrition and more.

Hello BURNOUT. Swipe right and take a look at that cortisol pattern!
We often hear how we DON'T want high stress hormones aka high cortisol, but we also surely do not want LOW cortisol. We want it JUST RIGHT.
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone that your adrenal glands produce and release.
Your adrenal glands are located at the top of your kidneys and your conventional doctor is likely not talking about them.
Cortisol's role in the body:
1️⃣Regulates your bodies STRESS response
2️⃣Regulates inflammation: Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory hormone
3️⃣Supports energy levels
4️⃣Maintains healthy blood pressure
5️⃣Supports healthy blood sugar levels
6️⃣Helps you sustain your energy levels
7️⃣Controls your sleep-wake cycle
8️⃣Regulates metabolism
9️⃣Supports immune function
🔟Plays a role in thyroid health
1️⃣1️⃣Supports our hormones
When cortisol is extremely low, you always want to rule out Addison's disease.
After long term stress, trauma and/or burnout, our poor adrenals can't pump out proper levels of cortisol your body needs to function and FEEL GOOD.
When your doctor says your labs are normal and you are feeling OFF, trust your intuition and seek out naturopathic care to get to the bottom of it.
How do you recover adrenal glands like this? So many ways! It will take time but QUALITY SLEEP is one of the biggest ones to nourish your adrenals back to health.
Stay tuned for my upcoming live 21 day group program to help you recover from burnout and support your adrenals!

Today is my 38th birthday.
Today I was Susan, or as my friends and family call me.. Suz, Sue, Suzzy, Suzabella.
Today I was not a doctor, or a health care provider. I was just Me.
If you know me or are my patient, you know I put my all into e v e r y t h i n g. This can be a blessing and a curse bc it can be a recipe for burn out. I have completely neglected the F U N that is so necessary for our health and healing.
So today I put on my high heels, makeup and a dress and laughed and danced the night away.
Oh how sweet it is to spend some time nurturing your soul.
I’m sharing because I KNOW there are fellow entrepreneurs out there or anyone who is extremely career driven who needs the reminder to experience joy.
I truly love you all for following along and letting me be ME.
XO,
Sue

HOMEOPATHY is one of my favorite ways to help my patients.
If you've been following me for a while, you’ve seen me talk about homeopathy quite a bit on here. And, if you are a virtual patient of mine, it is likely you have been recommended a homeopathic medicine from me!
packages single medicines in a portable and easy dispensing tube, commonly called a “blue tube.”
I always recommend that my patients keep homeopathic medicines at home for common health conditions, as well as when traveling so they are prepared for ANYTHING.
Today I wanted to introduce you to ARSENICUM ALBUM.
Okay- so how can this help you? Well, we know its the summer time and people LOVE to travel. While not a glamorous topic, I know you will thank me later bc Arsenicum is great for...Travelers diarrhea & food poisoning!
Arsenicum can also provide relief from vomiting, nausea, cramps and weakness! How many times are you feeling these symptoms and wish you had something to grab?!
You want to keep Arsenicum album at home, as well as bring along when traveling in the event any member of your family may need it. And remember, homeopathy can be used for the entire family, no matter the age of your children! Homeopathy doesn't interact with any medications either.
Arsenicum is my go-to homeopathic medicine when patients need relief from these undesirable symptoms.
Directions: At the onset of symptoms, dissolve 5 pellets under the tongue 3 times a day until symptoms are relieved. Give 5 pellets after each diarrhea episode.
You can find Arsenicum in my Travel pack on the shop page of my website www.naturallysue.com or you can use code: NATURALLYSUE at BoironUSA.com for a 25% discount!
Please share with me if you have ever used Arsenicum or what has been your fav homeopathic medicine! 👇🏼
invited me on her podcast "How Human's Heal" to talk about TRAUMA RECOVERY. We will be sending out a newsletter with more info on trauma in the next 2 weeks, so make sure to sign up for my free guide to be added to my mailing list! A pop up will come up when you go to www.naturallysue.com!
I am no stranger to trauma. I remembered a childhood trauma 6 years ago that my body held a secret to protect me all of these years. I'm not going to lie, I did go into full melt-down mode when I remembered, but I had the support of incredible healers, therapists, friends/family and doctors that made this process less daunting. Seeking out help is pivotal in times like these. I can go into those hyper-independent modes (also a trauma response) and that can truly add even more stress having to tackle something of this depth alone. Can you relate to this?
Dr. Doni and I talk on how:
-There can be fear to do this work and that is NORMAL.
-We tend to turn to alcohol, food, and other substances or choices in order to avoid looking at our trauma. ITS A COMMON COPING MECHANISM, BUT NOT IDEAL NOR HEALTHY AND THUS WHY WE NEED TO PROCESS THE TRAUMA IN A SAFE WAY.
-We have to feel safe to feel the feelings we haven’t felt.
-Often, with a history of trauma, gentle approaches are better, and actually essential.
-It is common to be so sensitive to even treatments that are helpful.
Please listen by visiting my website at: www.naturallysue.com and scroll all the way to the bottom of the homepage for my podcasts and give it a listen!
I would love to hear how you have healed your trauma over the years? Have you been resistant to healing your trauma? What have been your challenges? Please share below!

Dr. Sue
Peri-Menopause - https://mailchi.mp/9af5d2ad732b/peri-menopause-hydration-benefits
Yes, thats right! Many of us have heard of Lyme and suspect due to our mystery symptoms that we may have been infected and go to our MD to ask for testing. The MD usually asks if they had a bulls-eye rash (google the image) and they usually say testing is not necessary if we didn’t get that rash.
Did you know that many people may get a rash that doesn’t look like the typical “bullseye” but may look like a pimple, like eczema or strange unknown rash? This makes Lyme even more tricky to detect 🙄
40-50% of people do not get that perfect rash, and some get NO RASH at all!
Your doctor usually goes down the typical 2 tiered testing model. They will start with an Elisa test, which checks for antibodies for Borrelia burgdorferi. Then, only if the Elisa is positive, will it reflex to a western Blot IgM/IgG, considered the “gold standard” for lyme testing.
The problem is, many times that Elisa test is negative, never reflexing to the western blot. Both tests are very inaccurate, bc they are checking your IMMUNE response to the organism, not the ACTUAL organism.
The tick gets better lab tests than you! If you save a tick, they will perform testing of the actual organism on the tick, but not humans!!!
The problem with the testing is that the immune system may not elicit antibodies if you got the infection YEARS ago, which will yield a ***false negative*** 😩
The CDC lyme western blot was never meant to be for diagnostic purposes, and this is why many bands are not even being tested and we are missing incredible amounts of lyme cases.
I tested negative to almost every lyme test, so don’t let these tests fool you!! Bioresonance testing is what found mine. I do highly specialized lyme testing for patients who are getting false negatives and we know something is NOT right with them.

Let's ease the pain ladies and stop your suffering! Too many women are struggling unnecessarily from period cramps. If you are someone who dreads their me**es due to horrific cramps, then the first step is working on the root cause as to why you have them in the first place to get sustainable results. We use the in our practice to test hormones + adrenals to work on your hormonal imbalances so your period doesn't knock you down.
So many patients of mine have been held hostage to taking birth control bc their GYN gave them no other options! This happened to me in my teenage years too! The BCP comes w/side effects (that's another post) and is NOT curing anything.
As we are working on the root cause, I also offer natural alternatives for pain relief that are much safer than using NSAIDs (which can negatively impact your hormones, gut + liver, etc). Here are some of my go-to's:

It was not until I was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease 6 years ago that I started paying extra careful attention to the effect MOLD has on ones body (especially bc mold can reactivate lyme!).
You can do everything right with your healing, but if you neglect addressing the effects mold may be having on your body, you only get so far. This goes for patients with any condition.
Through the years I have seen patients through my virtual practice and in-office in NYC with a long list of mysterious symptoms. After asking the right questions and doing the proper labs, many times we realized mold was a factor keeping them sick.
The best way to begin treating Mold? SWEATING! The skin is one of our primary emunctories, or pathways of elimination.
Infrared sauna can pe*****te deep within the tissue for effective elimination.
Benefits of an infrared sauna:
👉Flushes out TOXINS (ie. mold, heavy metals, phthalates)
👉Ultimate detoxifier
👉Mitochondrial support
👉Improves circulation
👉 Immune modulation
👉 Pain and inflammation reduction
👉Better sleep
👉 Weight loss
👉 Clear and tighter skin
👉 Relaxes the mind
is the best deal in infrared technology. It's my go-to for patients because it is portable, low-EMF (who wants to get radiated in the sauna?! No one!) as well as there is no harmful off-gassing! You also receive a grounding mat! . I selected the white sauna for my apartment and I can sweat at my own convenience!

So, all I need to do is drink some tea to shed some weight?! Not so fast...You can't forget about a clean diet, movement, stress management, sunshine, etc!
Don't underestimate the weight loss benefits of tea. See below!
🌿GREEN for METABOLISM
- The combo of catechins and caffeine (found in green teas) that are thought to help boost your metabolic rate. In a study where everyone did the same exercise program, the people who also drank 4-5 cups of green tea daily lost an average of 2lbs more than those who didn't drink the tea.
🌿 BLACK for WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
-Black tea polyphenols have been shown to increase lipolysis (breakdown of fats) and reduce the rate at which fat cells increase. A study indicated black tea might be even more effective than green in helping reduce body weight. It also has a bonus benefit via your gut microbiome. Black tea can decrease certain gut bacteria associated with obesity while increasing bacteria associated with lean body mass.
🌿 GINGER for DIGESTION
- Gingerols, an active compound found in ginger, can support your body's important digestive activity. It stimulates your body to digest faster and keep your food moving to your colon. That helps free up energy for other things (goodbye after-eating sluggishness and brain fog!).
🌿CINNAMON for CRAVINGS
- Studies prove its ability to help your body keep its blood sugar levels stable. It also means you're less likely to have non-hunger cravings, and it also impacts your body's fat storage.
🌿MINT for SATIETY
-The scent and flavor of mint help you feel full and also diminish cravings. It's also a remarkable soother, helping to set you up for a great night's sleep.
My FAV organic tea brand is & you can use my code NATURALLYSUE for a discount!

I see so many patients undiagnosed with so many conditions, including Hypothyroidism.
The most common symptoms of under-active thyroid aka Hypothyroidism are:
🍃Fatigue
🍃Menstrual irregularities
🍃Depression
🍃Increased serum cholesterol
🍃Menorrhagia (heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding)
🍃Cold hands/feet
🍃Eczema
🍃Acne
🍃Dry skin
🍃Brittle and dry hair
🍃Stiff, crampy muscles
🍃Constipation
🍃Poor appetite
🍃Edema (swelling)
🍃Hair loss
🍃Weight gain
🍃Puffy/thick ankles
🍃Hoarseness
🍃Infertility
🍃Eye-brow thinning
Most conventional doctors do not intervene until your TSH is flagged high, however, we like to see TSH no higher than 2. So many patients are suffering with low thyroid and are getting told their “labs are normal.”
In our patients, we test for:
🍃TSH, Ft3, Ft4, Rt3, Anti-thyroglobulin, Anti-TPO to get a full picture.
🍃Anti-thyroglobulin and Anti-TPO are thyroid antibodies and are essential to test for because most hypothyroid cases start with hashimoto’s, and if we know, we can intervene to not only help the thyroid autoimmunity, but stop it from turning into hypothyroidism.
🍃You may also have low Ft3, which is our active thyroid hormone, and most doctors don’t check. You can have a good/normal TSH and have low Ft3 causing some of these symptoms!

Hashimoto’s and Graves disease are autoimmune thyroid diseases.
Autoimmune diseases like to have friends and unfortunately, having one autoimmune disease can increase our risk for developing another one.
It’s important to check for Celiac Disease specifically in anyone with Hashimotos and Grave’s disease.
Celiac disease is a serious immune disease where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. Two and one-half million Americans are undiagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications.
I do a Celiac panel on all patients in my practice because even without gastrointestinal symptoms, Celiac can be present. I had a patient with knee pain and no GI symptoms and he had celiac. You can’t rule it out just because you do not have gut symptoms.
Even if not celiac, it is really important to remove gluten from your diet in order to help reduce the thyroid antibodies.

Mind-Body Medicine Techniques + Berkey Water - https://mailchi.mp/f94337f9420d/mind-body-medicine-techniques-berkey-water
Iodine is an essential mineral needed by our body for thyroid health, immune health, hormonal health, etc.
Zinc and Vitamin A deficiency may impair iodine metabolism! Wild right?!
This is especially important to know if you have a thyroid condition as iodine is needed for synthesis of thyroid hormones (T4) within the thyroid.
Zinc is an essential mineral for our immune system, hormones, skin health, thyroid, etc. Zinc deficiencies are associated with poor thyroid metabolism (decreases T3 and increases Rt3).
We need to be sure we are getting in the proper nutrients to support our thyroid to prevent hypothyroidism or heal from it.
Are you getting enough of these vitamins through your diet?
✨Zinc: Grass fed beef, spinach, pumpkin seeds, cashews, cocoa, beans (chickpeas, lentils), mushrooms, turkey, quinoa
✨Vitamin A: Found in animal sourced food like oily fish, liver, cheese and butter. Many can’t tolerate dairy, so they supplement with Vitamin A.
✨Iodine: Seaweed (nori, kelp, kombu, wakame)- my favorite is the seaweed snacks (Organic and no canola oil). Iodine is also found in fish/shellfish but many avoid eating excess due to heavy metals.
When doing labs, I always check for RBC zinc, as well as check the Alkaline phosphatase marker in the CBC. Alk phos can be low when someone is having zinc deficiency.
*DO NOT* just take tons of an iodine supplement as too much can be harmful, especially in hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
Check out my Basic Supplement Starter Pack on the Shop page of my website www.naturallysue.com that has all of these essential nutrients to support your thyroid and overall health.

How do we truly heal if we don’t find out the exact reason that got us sick in the first place? 😕
If you have a thyroid disease, check out some common causes and ask yourself if you and/or your doctor are addressing these:
☑ High stress
☑ Low cortisol
☑ Selenium and other nutrient and mineral deficiencies
☑ Chronic illness/infections
☑ Impaired liver function
☑ Impaired gut function
☑ Drug interactions
☑ Heavy metal toxicity
☑ Mold illness
☑ Poor nutrition
☑ Low calorie diet/Carb restriction
☑ Trauma- “secrets” and or not speaking your truth
☑ Viral infections
☑ Gluten + dairy
☑ Old age
and many more!!!
I often hear patients with hypothyroidism tell me that their doctor keeps increasing their dosage of their thyroid meds...well thats b/c the cause is clearly NOT being worked on.
Finding the cause and working on it is pivotal to you healing.

Dr Shoemaker, an expert in Mold Illness explains the connection between mold and weight gain and/ or an inability to lose weight.
When you are living or spending most of your time in moldy environment, your body can create a cytokine storm (think of intense systemic inflammation) and in many people can result in damaged leptin receptors in the brain.
Have you heard of Leptin?
Leptin is a hormone produced in our fat cells that helps regulate our satiety, INHIBITS hunger, and regulates energy balance.
When the leptin receptors are doing their job and functioning properly, the body does NOT trigger hunger responses when there is no need for energy. That keeps us from over-eating.
When there is a cytokine storm from mold exposure as mentioned above, these leptin receptors are damaged!
Our fat cells then attempt to compensate by producing more leptin which leads to weight gain that is not responsive to diet or exercise.
Also, when the body has systemic inflammation, it can be nearly impossible to lose weight.
is a great urine test I use to test patients for mold, as well as checking other values in their labs including C4a, Tgf-beta, and more. is my favorite low EMF portal sauna bc we know we have to SWEAT that mold out! Discount code: DR.SUSAN
