If AI is so good, why are there still so many jobs for translators? Machine translation of foreign languages has been good for a while. And yet human translators are still in demand. Why isn’t AI killing these jobs? And even if it isn’t, how is it reshaping them?
Juneteenth celebrates liberation!
We would like to share some ways you can celebrate and commemorate without culturally appropriating, commodifying, or commercializing Juneteenth.
✨ Learn Juneteenth’s history: Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States—its origins date back to June 19, 1865. Three years after Juneteenth’s official recognition as a federal holiday, we must remind ourselves that the universal struggle for Black liberation from oppression continues to this day.
✨ Show appreciation without mass consumption: Instead of buying from performative campaigns by large corporations, show your support for Juneteenth by supporting Black-owned businesses and donating to organizations that uplift and center Black communities.
✨ Embrace difficult conversations: Make an effort to bring up Black liberation and what it means to your organization, and strategize ways you can promote and reinforce GIDBEA initiatives every day of the year.
✨ Continue your learning: Join us in honoring this day of remembrance by practicing radical joy, organizing, and taking action towards fully-realized freedom. "I am thrilled to be pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences with a focus on Organizational Behavior and Change, and a concentration in Leadership and Organizational Strategy, at the NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies. This opportunity allows me to further my education by building upon my years of experience in both the public and private sectors.
It’s not just about advancing my career; it’s about setting an inspiring example for my children. Research shows that when children see their parents graduate, they are more likely to follow in their footsteps. My experience here at the NYU School of Professional Studies has been incredibly rewarding.
The enthusiasm and encouragement from my wonderful children have been truly inspiring throughout this journey. This Father’s Day, their gift to me is their unwavering support for this significant achievement that I will celebrate in the spring of 2026. My children are my daily motivation. The greatest joy will be seeing their proud smiles as they watch their dad receive his degree for the second time, walking with pride and purpose.
Being a working father and student is challenging, but the love and support of my children make it all worthwhile." - Muhammad, an NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies student, on the impact of an NYU SPS education on him and his children.

Time for a "reCap"! A look back at some of our favorite graduation caps from last week. 🎓
Recently, NYU hosted its inaugural event for NYC Public High School students. Among other events, the immersive in-person experience was a chance for high school students to engage with NYU School of Professional Studies dean Angie Kamath and student leaders in "real talk" conversations about student life, diversity and inclusion, and what NYU campus life is really like. Students also had the opportunity to attend interactive mini-talks with award-winning faculty that highlight real world problems solved by NYU faculty, and meet knowledgeable admissions experts who explained the application and financial side of attending college.
A look back at last Tuesday's Academic Award Ceremony Toast, which honored NYU School of Professional Studies students who received convocation and/or commencement awards. Surrounded by family and friends, the awardees were toasted by Dean Angie Kamath. 💜

"Today I want to recognize that each of you have finished what you started. It was tough. You were tired. At times, it may have felt impossible. But you took the opportunity and I hope you have recognized the lesson.
Have you ever thought about the word lesson? Let’s take apart that word:
Lesson. You had 'less' so you could move 'on'
Hear that again. You had “less” so you could move 'on'. Lesson.
What do I mean?
➡️ For some of you, it was 'money-less.'
➡️ For others, it was 'eat-out-less.'
➡️ For some of you, it might have been 'home-less.'
Overall, each of you had less time to spend with those who now surround you: your friends AND your family.
So many SPS graduates have full time jobs and families and attend school…wasn’t it grueling? Yet, YOU did it. Burning the candle at both ends over the past few years as you managed school, work, family, friends…
You chased your dream of education so that you could make a pivot in your life and career."

Yesterday was the NYU SPS 2024 Undergraduate Convocation. Congratulations to all our graduates! As you all begin to look towards your future, let these words from our speakers inspire you:
"Imposter syndrome is pervasive. When you realize career paths aren’t always linear, it becomes easier to understand what prompts it. What I have learned in a profession that’s high pressure, fast-paced and agonizingly competitive at times - is you need to keep moving. Move through the fear, move through the doubt and the uncertainty. Focus on the next right thing. It’s tempting to compare our inside to others’ outside. Keep the focus on yourself and know that hard work will pay off." - Morgan Brennan (NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies '09), co-anchor of CNBC’s Closing Bell: Overtime and the 2024 Undergraduate Convocation guest speaker.
"How could I not reach my highest potential when surrounded by such a remarkable group? We balanced the demands of work, life and education simultaneously. We've been the architects of our success, demonstrating ambition and courage. Some of us came here fresh out of high school, experiencing a college campus for the first time; while others came with established professional lives seeking to elevate their expertise or shift into uncharted territories. With the power of belief, we seamlessly integrated education into the intricate tapestry of our lives, emphasizing the value of versatility and adaptability." - Matt Kraus (NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies '24), the 2024 Undergraduate Convocation student speaker.

NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate associate dean Marc Norman is quoted in this ABC News story on the potential fears that a housing bubble could be on the horizon.
----
"It's a strange market that seems like an anomaly," Marc Norman, associate dean at the New York University School of Professional Studies and Schack Institute of Real Estate, told ABC News. "I can certainly see people wondering if it's a bubble."
The hot prices, however, stem from a straightforward instance of too much money chasing too few homes, experts told ABC News. During the Covid-19 pandemic, homebuilding slowed when shortages of materials and workers made input costs more expensive, Norman said. Right as the supply blockages began to fade, the Fed raised interest rates, making it more expensive for developers to borrow the money required to launch projects
Even in the absence of a full-on bubble, the market could use some deflation, Norman said. "The bigger problem to me than a bubble is just the lack of affordability," he added. "Maybe the bubble doesn't burst but some air gets let out of the balloon."
----
More:
Home prices are soaring. Is this another bubble? Nearly 15 years after a housing bubble triggered the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression, some observers are saying a housing bubble may happen again.

Recently, professor Joanne Tombrakos' Real World class did their final presentations at EY. The Real World: EY class engaged students in the creation of tangible consulting portfolios to help their clients create strategies to address a trending issue - a new and innovative generative AI tool. Students delivered their final pitches at EY in Hudson Yards in front of a panel of EY employees.
In Real World courses, students work for 14-weeks in multidisciplinary teams with an A-list professional organization and their executives to solve a real world problem that organization and those executives face with the intention of the organization implementing right and viable student solutions. Students feel real pressure, experience real competition, receive real feedback, go through a real collaborative problem-solving process.
