A 6-year-old named Wadea Al Fayoume was stabbed 26 times by his family landlord in Plainfield, Illinois. His mother also suffered stab wounds preventing her from attending her son's funeral. Joseph M. Czuba, the landlord, is being charged with first-degree murder attempted first-degree murder, two counts of a hate crime, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. For this Women Crush Wednesday CWGS would like to talk about feminist and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi. Mohammadi has been vocal about her disagreement with the forced wearing of hijabs in Iran and has spoken out about the oppression of women in Iran. She was sentenced to 16 years in prison for her involvement in the movement, and while in prison was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her constant campaigning for women’s rights and human rights.
Rosalind Franklin was a scientist with a PhD in physical chemistry during the mid 1900’s. In 1952, she became the first person to successfully capture DNA’s form on camera, a photo known as “Photograph 51”. Through circumstances that many historians still debate, researchers James Watson and Francis Crick obtained the photograph, and used it in the famous publication of their model of DNA’s double helix structure. Rosalind Franklin was not given any credit for her work on the discovery until Watson’s memoir named her as the scientist who took Photograph 51 in 1968.

For this Women Crush Wednesday, CWGS wants to highlight French mathematician Sophie Germain. Germain’s work is foundational to the applied mathematics used in the construction of skyscrapers to this day. Her study of mathematics was highly discouraged by her parents and her teachers, but she persevered and continued on with her studies. She even sometimes hid behind a male pseudonym in order to be taken seriously by her professors. She eventually was allowed to attend sessions at the Institut de France and was the first woman to do so.
This Women Crush Wednesday, CWGS would like to talk about Indian poet, feminist, and politician Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949). In her early years, Naidu was considered a child prodigy; she spoke 5 languages, wrote poetry from a young age, and became famous after scoring the highest on an entrance exam to Madras University at only 12 years old. She attended college in England, where she became involved in the women’s suffrage movement. She became an important figure in the Indian Independence movement against the British Raj, being the first woman president of the Indian National Congress (Mahatma Gandhi’s political organization). She also was a cofounder of the Women’s India Association in 1917.
