New CA Law Hopes to Prevent Homelessness Among Foster Youth 12/14/2021

But on Jan. 2, 2022 the law is changing. The Children’s Advocacy Institute co-sponsored AB-546, new legislation by Assemblyman Brian Maienschein (D-77) will require counties to report a foster youth’s housing plan to a judge before they exit the system. The bill was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom unopposed.

However, reports say as many as a third of young adults aging out of California’s foster care system experience homelessness. A new law is hoping to improve those statistics.

One of our student's is conducting research specifically for her Dissertation on adults who were previously dependents of the court (i.e. former foster youth, etc.) to look at the potential physical & mental health outcomes of child maltreatment in later life.

You don't have to be in school for the Chafee cash card it's a stimulus for foster youth that is eligible to apply. It is separate from the Chafee that you get if you are going to school.
The California Department of Social Services is providing one-time funding via cash cards to address critical financial needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible youth were in foster care on their 18th birthday, are ages 18 through 26 but not yet 27, and are or were eligible for extended foster care. Eligible youth ages 18-20 will receive $600 and eligible youth ages 21-26 will receive $1,500.
