Nurses rally in Hollywood for hospital security bill Nurses rallied outside Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center on Friday to support a state bill designed to make hospitals safer. Assembly Bill 2975 would require hospitals to “adopt a workplace violence prevention plan.”

AB 2975 by passed the Assembly Labor Committee today. Jesse Deol, RN, from Encino Hospital Medical Center testified in support about the high stakes:
“Unfortunately one of my colleagues was stabbed. I didn’t know at the time. I heard a loud noise in the room. I went in to help, and I was stabbed as well...An ER doctor i worked with for 20 years is no longer able to work because of this incident...This needs to get passed...We should be able to do our job safely.”
AB 2975 will address hospital violence by:
🔵Requiring metal detectors at key entrances
🔵Requiring that metal detectors be staffed by trained security guards
🔵Requiring trained personnel - NOT nurses or other healthcare workers - to search personal belongings for weapons

New reporting in the Ventura County Star shows more evidence of the staffing crisis inside California hospitals. Hospitals will continue to dodge the law until the CA Dept of Public Health enforces it.
Ventura County hospitals receive 239 complaints, reports show; Los Robles cited most Ventura County hospitals were targeted in 239 complaints and incident reports investigated by state regulators in 2023.
New reporting in the shows more evidence of the staffing crisis inside California hospitals, a crisis made worse when hospital corporations ignore mandatory nurse to patient ratios. Hospitals will continue to dodge the law until the CA Dept of Public Health enforces it. SEIU 121RN members have called for stronger enforcement since the executive order ended last year—and we’re not through yet.
