From Flight to Film: How a Chance Meeting Sparked 'Bardejov's' Remarkable Journey "I believe that this film is very important, especially now, and I hope that people will watch it and understand what antisemitism is and why it is so important not to keep silent in its face.”

Tomorrow is the holiday of Purim which is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). Purim 2024 begins on Saturday night, March 23 and continues through Sunday, March 24. It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian empire from Haman’s plot to eradicate all the Jews in the empire.

During this holiday, it is customary for children and adults to dress up in costumes. A traditional Purim food called hamantaschen (or Ozney Haman, in Hebrew) is a staple of the holiday, they are three-cornered pastries bursting with poppy seeds or another sweet filling. On the day before Purim, it is also customary to fast, commemorating Esther’s fasting and praying to G‑d that He save His people.

This photo shows two members of Bardejov's Jewish Community dressed in costumes for Purim, it was taken in 1924. Standing on the right in the photo is Pinkas Abrahamovic. In his adult life, Pinkas was a mason, engraving headstones with names and artwork, and he was also a cantor. He lived with his family on Slovenská Street. The family later moved to Košice, and then they eventually immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City, where Pinkas worked as a mason and a cantor for 42 years. The photo was provided by the Abrahamovic family.
