We are also very excited to announce this summer Stoneleigh Fellow, Sarah Katz!

About Sarah
Sarah Katz currently serves as a Stoneleigh Fellow and Clinical Professor of Law at Temple University, where she also leads the Family Law Litigation Clinic, handling custody, child and spousal support, adoption, and other family law matters in Philadelphia Family Court. She is a nationally acclaimed expert in trauma-informed legal advocacy and teaching, and her Fellowship work is an outgrowth of that research. As a Stoneleigh Fellow, she is creating resources to engage the legal community in advocacy that is centered in and responsive to the needs of those impacted by racialized harm in the child protection system.

About the Fellowship
Black and brown families disproportionately experience significant harm and trauma as a result of involvement with the child protection system. Nationally, there is a groundswell of organizing led by individuals with lived experience in the system, namely parents and former foster youth, to draw attention to these racialized harms and reduce the footprint of the system on their communities.

Sarah Katz, at Temple University Beasley School of Law, is seeking to engage lawyers and other stakeholders in supporting and building upon these existing efforts in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania to address systemic racism in the child protection system. She will research best practices for advocacy grounded in lived experience, with a particular focus on how lawyers can understand their role as collaborators and participants in the work. She will also develop materials for use by law professors, attorneys, and law students to deepen critical thinking, to reflect on the importance of letting those most impacted lead, and to let this understanding drive systemic reforms. Her ultimate goals are to create a new law clinic focused on achieving racial justice for Black and brown families impacted by the child protection system, and to help transform how lawyers and advocates perceive their role in this work.

We are thrilled to announce our newest Stoneleigh Fellow, Brandy Blasko!

About Brandy
Brandy Blasko currently serves as a Stoneleigh Fellow in the School District of Philadelphia’s (SDP) Office of School Safety. In this role, she is researching educational factors related to gun violence victimization and perpetration among the SDP’s current and former students. Brandy also leads the research, evaluation, and data management work within the Office of School Safety at the School District of Philadelphia and serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Temple University.

About the Fellowship
The gun violence epidemic is among the most pressing problems facing Philadelphians today, and far too often young people are involved as both victims and perpetrators. To date, research exploring predictors of youth gun violence victimization and perpetration has not fully considered the role of educational factors, including enrollment, transitions, attendance, and discipline.

Brandy is working within the School District of Philadelphia’s Office of School Safety to examine the primary drivers of gun violence victimization and perpetration among the School District's current and former students. Her work will also strengthen the city’s understanding of the connections between individual, community, and educational factors and their relationship to gun violence. Her efforts have the potential to inform policy and practice to preserve the safety of young people in and around Philadelphia schools.
