๐ณ๏ธโ๐ Celebrating Pride and the people who fought for us ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
In 1974, Philadelphia City Council held hearings on Bill 1275, which proposed adding sexual orientation as a protected category, prohibiting discrimination. This sparked protests from both supporters and opponents. The Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) of Philadelphia and the radical le***an group Dyketactics! demonstrated in favor, viewing it as a step towards equality and ending discrimination against the LGBTQ community. Religious fundamentalist groups and police/firefighter unions protested against it, arguing it infringed on their beliefs, promoted immorality, and would force them to employ or serve LGBTQ individuals against their convictions.
Dyketactics! garnered national attention for disrupting City Council meetings and became the first LGBTQ group to sue a city for police brutality against q***r people during the protests. Despite endorsements from groups like the Episcopal Diocese and NAACP, the bill stalled in City Council under opposition from conservative leaders like Council President George X. Schwartz. After heated debates and clashes with police, Bill 1275 failed to pass in 1975. It took until 1982 for Philadelphia to enact an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.
