On July 2nd and 3rd; NKF PANJ hosted our 17th Annual Mid-Atlantic Kidney Boot Camp. We were thrilled to have 38 fellows from 11 different schools!
This two-day symposium provides new fellows the training programs and the background that they need to start their fellowship. Fellows were given an understanding of the disease states that they are likely to encounter in nephrology and to network with their peers.
Thank you to all of our attendees, course directors, lecture staff, small group leaders and sponsors for making our symposium a yearly success!

June is ! 🌈 LGBTQIA+ individuals have historically faced health disparities linked to societal stigma and discrimination. In addition, they also face greater risk for the major risk factors of kidney disease such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension.
We at NKF believe all patients should be free from discrimination in health care, regardless of their identity or who they love.
Happy from NKF

April is National Donate Life Month, and PANJ is highlighting local kidney donor and recipient stories. Lauren became a living donor in 2014 after hearing about living organ donation on the news. When reading about living kidney donation online, she found a page with stories of people who needed transplants. As soon as she realized she could help someone that needed a transplant, she never had a second thought! She called UPenn, signed up for a donor information session, and 7 months later, she was donating her kidney! She started a donor chain where four people got kidneys the day she donated hers. Later on, she was able to meet her recipient and his wife, who also became a living donor, and they even came to her wedding a few years later! One important takeaway Lauren had was that even though she donated her kidney, she actually was the one who received. She got to meet so many amazing people in the process and is proud to be a part of an awesome community!

April 3rd is National Donate Life Living Donor Day! Today is a day to show appreciation to all living organ donors for their lifesaving generosity! To recognize living donors on this special day, PANJ is sharing a local story about living kidney donation. Read Gillian's kidney story below:
In 2016, Gillian underwent a kidney transplant from a living donor after enduring three and a half years of dialysis. After sharing her story through various channels including social media, her church group, and her workplace, her coworker Iwona stepped forward as a potential donor. Although Iwona wasn't a direct match for Gillian, she initiated a donor chain by donating to another recipient, ultimately leading to Gillian receiving a new kidney. A year post-transplant, Gillian met her donor, Leonna, and they celebrated her life-saving gift together. Gillian's transplant journey profoundly impacted everyone involved, supported by her close-knit team including her son and mother. She expresses gratitude to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center for their exceptional care. Through her experience, Gillian learned the invaluable importance of having a strong support system during the transplant process.

April is National Donate Life Month! To kick off our celebration, PANJ is highlighting organ donors in our area. Michele donated one of her kidneys to her brother, Michael. Since then, he has had two more transplants under his belt, including one from his daughter, Mary Kate. This inspired Michael’s other daughter to donate one of her kidneys to the National Donor Registry, which spread hope and saved someone’s life all the way in Washington D.C!
