In crafting their "Becoming a Leader of Leaders" program, Profs. Mike Useem and Gregory Shea aimed to both challenge conventional approaches and infuse a true sense of joy into leadership development even as they work with program participants to take on often difficult issues. Nearly two decades later, this commitment is evident in their semi-annual pilgrimage to Gettysburg.
For participants, this journey is more than just a field trip—it's a profound exploration of leadership mindset, beginning with an in-depth consideration of the organizational and leadership issues that led to the American Civil War. This sets the stage for exploring Gettysburg as a case study filled with leadership challenges and practices, both effective and ineffective.
Following an immersive day at the battlefield park, participants from around the world have the opportunity to reflect deeply and draw powerful parallels between their own leadership journeys and their respective countries' histories. This is not the type of material that can truly be conveyed via slides, Prof. Shea explains, as the trip offers a rare opportunity to process, reflect, and engage in difficult yet essential conversations.
For all who’ve participated in this program, we hope the insights gained at Gettysburg continue to shape your leadership journey for decades to come.
