Flowers for Trans People is a day of action hosted by SisTers PGH. For Trans Day of Remembrance last year, we had a billboard that went up reading, “Give Us Our Flowers While We’re Still Here.” Today, we’re here to lead by example. It’s not a difficult thing to share love and appreciation.

As such, this day of action is easy to participate in. All you have to do is nominate someone to receive free bouquets of flowers. It’s that simple. It should always be that simple. Note: they have to live in Pittsburgh, no customizations currently available.

On the evening of January 30th fire hit the home of one our community members and one of my best friends Ariq Barrett-Pearsall. Most of the LGBTQ+ community may know of him from Black Kids Can Cook, catering community events around the city, from his amazing work feeding children when the pandemic hit, and schools shut down and going around the city to help feed the homeless regularly. Luckily Ariqs 2 young sons were not home at the time and Ariq made it out of the house before it collapsed into rubble. They are all undoubtedly traumatized after losing their home once filled with love, laughter, and memories. Ariq has literally lost everything and now it’s our turn to help him. Just imagine losing everything you own in the blink of an eye. When I heard about what happened I called Ariq and found out he had a hotel for a few days. I then reached out to my sister Kendall Stephens who you might know was the victim of a hate crime a few months ago and thanks to many of you and your generosity money were raised to help her in that time of need. After that incident, Kendal and I talked and discussed using some of the money raised to help other community members in an emergency. Kendall immediately said ok let’s get Ariq an Air bnb for the month so he at least has a place to stay and can figure out next steps. So now we need the help of our amazing communities and allys once again to help a black transman get back on his feet. All money raised will be to help replace some lost belongings like clothes and shoes from the fire and to secure a new safe place to stay after the month in the air bnb is up. As always, your support and generosity is beyond appreciated. Please help if you can spare anything and even if you cannot please share far and wide.

At SisTers PGH, we do the grassroots work that many others refuse to do. We operate as a transgender centered drop-in space, resource provider and shelter transitioning program that offers outreach, accurate transgender education, trans inclusion training, advocacy, and emergency housing for transgender people of Pittsburgh. A primary function of SisTers PGH is to amplify the voices of trans people within conversations around housing access, art, city/state leadership, mental health support, medical care, employment opportunities, and education, because these issues are too often ignored by those in power.

Our organization has grown immensely since 2013. Since then, we have organized the annual People’s Pride PGH, an alternative Pride Month event that centers on black and brown lives. Every year, we march to include local nonprofits, unions and community members. We march to oppose white-, cis-, gay-centered Pride parades and extravagant parties which are too expensive for many non-profits and communities to participate in. We march to offer another opportunity to feel what being at a true Pittsburgh Pride is like and now have the opportunity for LGBTQ Pittsburghers to come together to be exactly what we should be a community that thrives together.
