“The most rewarding part of being a teacher is sharing the moments with kids on a daily basis — the ups, the downs, the happiness, the frustrations, the high-fives, the hugs, the tears, the laughter. It’s making those connections with kids and sharing the love and passion for learning — creating that safe space for young thinkers to take risks and feel confident and then seeing it happen.” ❤️
Such a beautiful testimony from Sarah Hohlfeld who just entered her 21st year of teaching! Sarah is now teaching Middle School ELA in Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland. 📚🚌
Sending well wishes to Sarah and her students this year! She graded from in 2003 with a degree in Secondary English 🎓✏️
Feeling nervous jitters when it comes to starting a new school year? Here’s advice from our alum Maggie Burke who now teaches 3rd grade at 🍎📚
“Feeling nervous is completely normal for starting a new school year! Most students, and even some teachers, feel this way. Remember, you’re not alone. Do not forget to ask questions if you are unsure about something.
Also do not forget to be yourself. It is the best way to make friends and have a great experience is to be yourself. Everyone is looking to make friends, so just be kind and open.” ✨❤️
Such incredible advice! So proud of all of YOU- our School of Education community and the inspiring impact you are making in your classrooms & beyond.
Excited to keep learning and growing with you this year! 🌻🌱 Brooke and Megan are both Sophomore Early Education Students and School of Ed Ambassadors! 💫
Love seeing these incredible alum post photos in their classrooms! Alexa graduated from Duquesne University School of Education in May 2022 and now teaches 1st grade at Waynewood Elementary in Fairfax County Public Schools, located in Virginia ❤️✨

Happy move-in day to our first-year and transfer students! ✨📦🚙 School of Ed’s Sophia Williams and Maddie Petragas are thrilled to be Entertainment Chairs on this year’s team!
Here’s what they are most looking forward to as we start the school year ❤️
“I’m so excited to show new students what connections they can make in the School of Ed. As a freshman, I sat next to Maddie on the first day of class, and I never would’ve have imagined how amazing of a friend and colleague I’d eventually find in her through both the School of Ed and Orientation.“ -Sophia
“I’m most excited to encourage forever friendships! Both the School of Education and Orientation have provided me with the most incredible opportunities and lifelong connections, particularly sparking my friendship with Sophia! You never know how far taking chances will take you & I’m so ready for our new students to take theirs! 💌” -Maddie
Educators who inspire. That’s who YOU are and what you do ❤️✨ Hearing young students whisper, "can I have a hug?" before leaving the classroom will never get old. Your efforts to create spaces where students feel comfortable, valued and seen will change this world for the better ⭐️
"Becoming an educator is very rewarding. It is a profession that allows you to create memories in a student’s life and impact their everyday. Teaching high school, literature based English, is fulfilling because it is a core subject where I can be a guide for students to explore the world around them. While also encouraging them to use their creativity and critical thinking skills."
'08 School of Education Alum Bethany Greenlee currently teaches 10th grade English and AP Literature at Apollo-Ridge School District. She is also the co-sponsor for the drama club and the school newspaper, "The Viking View". 🍎📰✨
"I had the best experience at Duquesne University. Some of my best of friends and memories were made on the Bluff. I had teachers that were models of how an excellent educator should present themselves in the classroom. I even model my AP Literature class off of the late Dr. Labriola’s class. He was my absolute favorite professor."
“My degree from has provided me with ample learning opportunities in various classrooms in the Pittsburgh area. I have been able to learn directly from expert teachers and work with them to teach students. I also have made lasting connections with many educators in the area, Duquesne faculty, and my peers.
My time in the School of Education has been enriching, engaging, and empowering. I continue to learn and grow throughout my career, but I have been
given such a great education that has prepared me to be a leader in my future classroom.”
-Alyssa Napolitana, Distinguished Student Teacher Award Winner ✨❤️

"It is an absolute honor to call Duquesne University my alma mater. Earning my doctoral degree at Duquesne propelled my career and helped me to see just how much I can persevere while working on my dissertation. As a faculty member, I love being able to discuss literacy theory with graduate students just beginning their degree specializing in literacy."
Dr. Marguerite Haldin earned her EdD in Educational Leadership in 2019 and is now a K-5 literacy coach at North Allegheny School District and teaches Literacy Theory in the M.S.Ed Reading and Literacy Education program at Duquesne.
"The Duquesne doctoral program in Educational Leadership centered on engaging the mind, heart, and spirit in the moment of action. As a teacher and leader, I have become an expert at problem-solving while keeping to mind all stakeholders in education. The networking opportunities alone were invaluable!"
"These handprints belong to my 22 kiddos who I student taught along with the principal of the school and my mentor teacher. I wanted them to be part of my dress because they truly helped me grow as a teacher and showed me why I am becoming an educator. They helped me to envision "little me" when I was in first grade looking up to my teachers and wanting to be just like them!"- Caterina Veneziano, Early Childhood Education '24 Graduate 📝
Another special memory from Spring Commencement is that Cat graduated alongside her very own 5th grade teacher Julie Mitchell. Julie was getting her M.S.Ed in Reading and Literacy Education at Duquesne and now teaches 1st grade at Blessed Trinity Academy. 📚🍎
Cat completed her undergrad in May '24 and is currently getting her Masters in Special Education and Applied Behavioral Analysis. She says it is making her "fall in love with the world of education all over again". ❤️
"As a parent, I saw firsthand how the Duquesne School of Ed supported Julia from the time she applied to be a Freshman to now when she is a graduating Senior. They BELIEVED in her."
We loved hearing these words from School of Education parent Angela Arlia. We are grateful to have such an incredible community here at Duquesne, including our wonderful SOE parents!
"My proudest moment was when Julia called me after one of her student teaching days at North Hills West View Elementary this semester and told me how great it felt to be with her second graders as they listened, learned and laughed during one of her sessions with them. She was assigned there to share her knowledge, however they also helped this new teacher grow too. Often growing up, I would say to Julia, "Bloom where you are planted" and that she did...right here at Duquesne University and beyond!"- Angela Arlia, mother of Julia Arlia (Class of 2024 Early Education graduate)
Duquesne's Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program participated in a horizon-expanding opportunity at the 50th annual ABAI (Association for Behavior Analysis International®) Conference in Philadelphia.
Assistant Professor of Special Education Dr. Reva Mathieu-Sher and two doctoral students, Duaa Alzahrani and Tingting Zhou, all attended and presented at the conference. Bringing together Board Certified Behavior Analysts from all over the world, Duquesne's faculty and students had the opportunity to share and learn the newest research and various practical applications for the science of behavior.
Duquesne's ABA program is committed to teaching practices rooted in compassionate care. Through this methodology, students learn how to embody the interpersonal skills required to successfully implement behavior analytic techniques in a caring, thoughtful, and ethical manner.

Antonio Battista values the student-teaching experience so much he’s done it twice—first at Deer Lakes School District in the Pittsburgh region, then at Gosford Hill School in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom.
“My favorite moments are when I'm able to walk around when students are working or have independent time and get to know them more,” said Antonio. “They want someone who can relate to them and genuinely care. I recognize that they all have something valuable to bring, and I take a lot of pride in that.”

"My experience in the Duquesne School of Ed program was fostered by many impactful field experiences and student teaching memories. Each teacher in this program went above and beyond to create real-life experiences, especially during the pandemic, where we were still learning even though we couldn't physically be in a classroom. As a future educator, the School of Ed has inspired me to never give up, and to always find a way to make something exciting.
Thank you to Duquesne School of Ed for always helping us find new ways to make connections with our students, and for never giving up on us. We will all be forever thankful for those memories! ❤️💙”
-Julia Arlia, Early Childhood Education Graduate and Distinguished Student Teacher Award Winner ✨
