Sailing Ships Maine

A Maine nonprofit providing youth with hands-on experiential education programs on land and at sea and helping them consider alternative life and career paths

Sailing Ships Maine (formerly Tall Ships® Maine) goes steps beyond the normal daysailing programs of Maine and sends kids to sea on sailing ships for week-long voyages of self-discovery. We draw their eyes up from their phones and direct them skyward as they handle the sails that send them to their destination. They don't need to know anything about sailing or have a dime to pay. They only need to

Women's Sailing — Sailing Ships Maine 08/10/2024

Newsflash: I'm happy to announce that Sailing Ships Maine is offering one more Sailing Into Your Strength weekend of Basic Sail Training for Women aboard a PJ-36 sloop. Captain Sal was my deckhand on my last weekend in July, and she's a born sailing instructor and captain. Here are the details:

When: August 23-25
Time: Friday 1pm - Sunday 5pm
Where: South Freeport Town Landing
Cost: $795

In the company of other women, you'll learn and practice how to take the helm and participate as crew, plan routes and navigate using paper and electronic charts, read the wind and maneuver through points of sail, pick up moorings and drop anchor, tie knots, cleat, and coil.

But that's not all. In addition to learning HOW to practice these skills, you'll learn WHY we do them and be able to ask all those questions you never felt you could ask. In a supportive environment of women, you'll not only build your competence, but you'll also expand your confidence in ways that extend beyond the water.

Here's what one woman said about our weekends:

"I learned a ton and had lots of fun and laughs with our mighty crew of four intrepid women plus very capable Captain and First Mate. This program taught me more in a weekend than I have learned in my many hours on sailboats with various partners. Sailing Into Your Strength women's sail training through Sailing Ships Maine is a bad ass program." --JoAnn

52 years ago this month, Eben Whitcomb picked up a pen and wrote this letter to Art Tilley:

1/17/72

Dear Art,
Thank you for your confidence in the windjammer scheme. It pleases me that you are interested and I appreciate your kind words. The boat will be built in the Gamage yard in So. Bristol, Maine and operate out of Camden in Summer, St. Thomas, V.I. in the winter. WHEN it will depends on a sequence of events. I'm working with 3 banks now. As soon as I can get a commitment for a loan from them (or one), we will submit it to S.B.A. for a guarantee. At that time, I'll ask the investors to send their funds to the Bank's officers to be held as escrow pending S.B.A. and Bank final approval. I will also have given each a copy of the partnership agreement (It will be a limited partnership) for study and hopefully approval. In that way, I figure that the investors are protected until everything is all arranged. Incidentally, I will not receive any income from my shares until the investors have their original investment back. Unfortunately some people are not as concise as you and I won't be actually sure of the total until that time (moment of truth). In any case the investor will be protected.

I'm interested in your plan - which you didn't even acknowledge - I suppose you are going to devote full time to your various enterprises around Bangor. That should be fun and I suspect you have had it in mind for some time. Best of luck!

Sincerely, Eben

Construction time about 9 months plus or minus

Our Story

Sailing Ships Maine goes steps beyond the normal daysailing programs of Maine and sends kids to sea on sailing ships for week-long voyages of self-discovery. We draw their eyes up from their phones and direct them skyward as they handle the sails that send them to their destination. They don't need to know anything about sailing or have a dime to pay. They only need to join a team, give and take instructions, and work together in a 24/7 environment where they must be dependable and must depend on others. It's here they can discover a strength and self-reliance that they might not have ever found ashore.
