Congrats to our Valedictorian, Emily Kate Burdette!Emily Kate Burdette, SFL Valedictorian and a Family and Consumer Sciences Education major, is from Saratoga Springs, Utah. She started attending BYU in the Fall of 2018 and declared her major after serving a mission in the Texas Houston East Mission—Spanish speaking. One of the things Emily loves the most about teaching is working with students as they learn to find their own passions and explore the opportunities that lie ahead of them. She is incredibly grateful for all the mentors she has had throughout her life, especially her BYU professors, and supervisors at the Upholstery shop and the foods lab on campus. In addition to academics and teaching, Emily loves creating memories with her family and friends as well as making things with her own two hands—specifically, cake and cupcake decorating, quilting, cross-stitching, and upholstering. Emily will teach Culinary and Baking and Pastry at Timpanogos High school in the fall.

Congrats to our Salutatorian, Cambria Siddoway!Cambria Siddoway, SFL Salutatorian and Family Studies major, grew up in Bountiful, Utah. After serving a mission in Austin and San Antonio, Texas, she transferred to BYU to attend school with her husband. After completing her first research practicum, she presented at the Fulton conference, then the American Sociological Association conference, and now the Society for Research on Adolescence. In addition to being a co-author on several papers, she submitted a first-authored paper for publication, and is preparing another based on her most recent mentored research experiences in the SFL Academy. She received an award for this research at the Fulton Conference. Cambria also learned to enjoy writing and workshopping papers with other students by reviewing and editing student papers on the Family Perspectives editorial board, and TAing for advanced writing. She now plans to continue her education at BYU in the Marriage, Family, and Human Development Master's program this fall, where she will study gender in adolescence.

She says, “The amazing professors in SFL made my experience at BYU one of intellectual growth, personal development, and self-discovery. They are examples to me of Christlike devotion and faith. Amidst many challenges to faith today, I found peace and community within the School of Family Life that transformed my testimony.”

Congrats our Salutatorian, Briella Smith!Briella Smith, SFL Salutatorian and Human Development major, is from Cypress, Texas. One of the things Briella loves the most about her major is the amazing people with whom she has interacted including peers, BYU professors, and families in the community. The School of Family Life professors enriched her love for God and for serving with charity. She is grateful for the multiple opportunities she had to work as a Teaching Assistant in SFL 210 and SFL 240, and as a Research Assistant with Project M.E.D.I.A. in Denver. She also presented her own research at the Fulton Conference. In addition to academics, she loves spending time with her family and listening to Taylor Swift. Briella plans to use her degree in her new position as Service Coordinator for Provo Early Intervention.

She says, “The School of Family Life offered me many opportunities to direct my career path towards community outreach for families. I am incredibly grateful for all the people who helped me succeed in college including my professors, amazing parents, husband, and siblings.”
