Who is this bovine beauty? 👀 Wrapping up our last feature for National Dairy Month is the prize-winning show heifer extraordinaire, Cuervo! She is a Brown Swiss heifer that participates with students on our Dairy Show Team. Fun fact: Cuervo has two sisters in our herd and recently became an aunt!

Here's what you should know about Brown Swiss cattle:

🥉 Brown Swiss cattle are the third most popular dairy breed in the USA!
⛅ They are revered for their ability to thrive in a variety of climates, geographic locations, and management systems.
🎨 Their coats can range in color from white to various shades of grey, tan, or dark brown.
🐮 Common breed characteristics include longevity, adaptability, docility, and tenacity.

And of course, who could forget their iconic fuzzy ears?!

Remember Stella from last year's ? We'd like to introduce you to her stellar daughter, Nova, on this week's ! 🐄

Following in her mother’s hoofsteps, Nova is already one of our top-producing Holsteins at only three years old. She is projected to finish her second lactation with 79,302 lbs. of milk produced, which is approximately 9,221 gallons!

Cow comfort in the parlor is essential for good milk production. that our cows are milked twice a day, spending a maximum of 15 minutes in the milking stalls, with only 5-7 minutes of that time being milked by our milking units each session? The girls enjoy comfy rubber mats to stand on, shade, and fans throughout the entire process before returning to their barn and pasture to eat, drink, groom, nap, and relax!

Did you know that rest is crucial for dairy cattle's health and milk production? By dedicating enough time to well-deserved R & R, lactating cows can increase blood circulation to their udder, boosting milk production! On average, dairy cattle spend about 8-12 hours a day lying down, with around 4 hours devoted to sleep.

Our 329-acre dairy farm supplies fresh milk and cream, which we then pasteurize and use to craft our time-honored Howling Cow recipes made with only the highest-quality ingredients.

To kick off our series for , meet one of the stars of our Jersey herd, Leia! She is 9 years old and just began her 8th lactation. To date, Leia has produced over 129,987 lbs of milk, which is approximately 15,115 gallons! 🥛

Last year, we shared how our heifers generally receive names beginning with the same letter as their dam’s (mother's) name or following a similar theme. However, sometimes their names serve as a tribute to current or historical events associated with their birthday...

Fun fact: Did you know chocolate ice cream was one of the first ice cream flavors and was actually created before vanilla?! It's history dates back to the late 19th century. 🍫
