A SINGULAR HONOR. Dr. Mike Nolan, professor of radiation oncology and biology at , has been awarded the Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professorship in Oncology. Nolan’s outstanding career and excellence in life-changing cancer research, student mentoring and patient care have been honored before, and a distinguished professorship will allow him to reach even higher. “The funding available through these endowment professorships provides some flexibility,” Nolan says. “So when you get a crazy idea, there's resources to be able to test those ideas. Sometimes that's where the coolest things come out of, the biggest innovations.”

A COOL ADDITION. The new, state-of-the-art dairy barn on the campus is the peak of efficiency and technology, offering a waste-disposal system, hydraulic gates, data-collecting technology and room to double the college's milking capacity. In addition, a herd of industrial fans keeps the facility 20 degrees cooler — for both the cows and the scores of veterinary students learning more about farm animal medicine, a critical discipline in North Carolina. PURSUING THE MISSING PIECE: Jeff Meier has always known that he wanted to work with animals. He followed that passion into a career of running facilities on commercial swine farms in North Carolina and managing a veterinary clinic.

But something was missing from that path. Meier wanted to do more than manage facilities with animals. He wanted to be the veterinarian caring for them. This fall, Meier will take a significant step forward in that goal when he returns to the classroom as a member of 's Class of 2028. Read more: http://ncst.at/2tVq50ST0yj

RVT TO DVM: Megan Wallace, a member of the Class of 2028, won't have to change her commute when she begins classes this month. Wallace has been working as a veterinary technician in the NC State Veterinary Hospital's small animal emergency clinic for over two years, saving pets' lives and forming bonds with colleagues who encouraged her to pursue her dreams of becoming a veterinarian and starting her own pet telehealth business. She looks forward to growing her emergency medicine knowledge while in vet school.

“It’s been surreal helping the fourth-year students working in the ER over the past few months, because I keep thinking, ‘That’s going to be me in three years!’” Wallace says. Her story: http://ncst.at/yX5M50SRBGg

A PASSION FOR PIGS: We're welcoming the Class of 2028 to campus this week, and to celebrate we're introducing our community to a few of these first-rate first-years! Lindsey Britton, from Edenton, North Carolina, got her first taste of farm culture at an NC State University livestock science camp while in high school. An undergrad animal science class cemented her love for production animals, and since then she's centered her career on pig health. Britton is a National Pork Board Real Pork Scholar and hopes to one day serve as a systems veterinarian on a rural swine farm, ideally in North Carolina.

"The idea of being a vet has been so coveted and so far-off for so long that it seemed like a dream," Britton says of starting her DVM degree. "But now it’s actually real!”

MORE THAN SKIN-DEEP: When Jayne Thompson talks about her schnoodle, Macy, and the 16 years of companionship they shared, her love for the fluffy pup with a “pleasant personality” shines through.

And when she thanks former dermatology resident Dr. Natalie Gedon for stopping a treatment-resistant skin infection Macy developed in spring 2023, improving Macy's health and happiness before she succumbed to lymphoma this April, there’s not a dry eye in the room.

In late July, Thompson gifted Gedon a Coat of Excellence for her attentive and compassionate care. The honor includes a donation that supports the Veterinary Hospital and dermatology service, a cash gift for Gedon and a personalized lab coat and plaque bearing Gedon and Macy’s names.

Macy had been fighting a facial MRSP skin infection for a month by the time she arrived at NC State in April 2023. The bacteria that caused the infection are antibiotic-resistant, and it was clear Macy needed a dermatologist’s expertise as the wound spread across her face and neck. Thompson says Gedon walked her through Macy’s treatment plan step-by-step, making sure Thompson understood how to continue Macy’s care at home.

“Within 10 days of that first visit, Macy was infection-free,” Thompson says. “I found the email that I sent to Dr. Gedon after our last visit: ‘We can’t thank you enough. You were our last hope, and you made all the right calls. You saved her life.’ Macy and I had so many great memories in our last year together, and that time was just priceless.”

“That means the world to me,” Gedon responds. “It was a dream to practice here, and I’ll remember you and Macy for the rest of my life.”

ICYMI: Last year, cardiology resident Dr. Seth Bowden helped close an opening in the heart of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppy, and the dog filled his heart in return when Bowden adopted her shortly afterward. Caring for the pup, Tilly, in the hospital and at home has given him insight into what other owners may be feeling when they take their pets to NC State for cardiac care.

"It's cool to think about how all of the training we do at NC State has now impacted my own life," Bowden says. Read how the College of Veterinary Medicine is guiding this cardiology resident with a heart of gold toward his career goals: http://ncst.at/bF5050SPjv9

He also presented a tick surveillance project that included information about the growing One Health threat of tick-borne diseases in humans, livestock and wildlife. "I am grateful for all that I have learned this summer and the ability to see how my veterinary education can be combined with a passion for wildlife health and conservation," he says.
