Yesterday, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District taught CPR and First Aid to the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Public Works Department. Teaching CPR and First Aid to Public Works personnel is crucial because they often work in environments where accidents or medical emergencies can occur around the City of Rancho Cucamonga. Equipping them with these skills enables them to respond effectively in emergencies, potentially saving lives until public safety personnel arrive.

There have been multiple occasions where Public Works personnel have witnessed an incident first-hand while in the community and were able to provide rapid response in a critical situation. We could not be more proud to work alongside the dedicated professionals of the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Public Works Department.

If you are interested in learning Hands-Only CPR, please visit RCFire.Org and watch a one-minute tutorial from one of our Rancho Cucamonga firefighters!

Yesterday, Assembly Majority Leader Emeritus Eloise Gómez Reyes, presented the City of Rancho Cucamonga with a check for $3.2 Million for the construction of the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s 9/11 Memorial Park.

On July 4, 2002, steel remnants from the World Trade Center were donated to the Rancho Cucamonga community and displayed at the Jersey Fire Station for several days to allow community members to pay their respects and reflect on the events of September 11, 2001. Reflection soon led to the desire for a permanent memorial in the City. When the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District began planning for Fire Station 178 it presented the opportunity to make this more than just a fire station.

The City of Rancho Cucamonga and the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District are extremely appreciative for the support of Assembly Majority Leader Emeritus Eloise Gómez Reyes for championing the $3.2 Million funding for the 9/11 Memorial Park. The park will provide space for the City of Rancho Cucamonga and surrounding communities across the Southern California region for reflection and remembrance that commemorate the events that took place on September 11, 2001, as well as honor fallen service members. Being able to tie multiple community needs and interests into a centrally located fire station makes this a natural hub for individuals to reflect and connect.

This week is Fire Prevention Week! Did you know that cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home injuries? 🍳

Cooking is something we do every day, so it is important to practice safe cooking habits and avoid kitchen-related fires by following these safety tips:
🔹Never leave food unattended on the stove.
🔹Do not store anything in the oven and remove all items before preheating. Make sure your oven is free from grease or droppings from previous uses.
🔹Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drinks are prepared to prevent injuries.
🔹Keep your stovetop clear of anything that can catch fire like oven mitts, towels, cutting boards, and food packaging.
🔹Keep a lid and fire extinguisher nearby for small stove fires. If the fire is too big, get everyone out of the house and call 9-1-1 immediately.

Recently, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District responded to a trash truck with it’s load of trash on fire. The driver was able to reposition the truck to a safe place to dump the load in order for firefighters to extinguish the fire. The Fire Investigator determined the fire was likely caused by somebody putting coals into their trash that were still hot enough to cause a fire.

As we enter football season and weekend barbeques, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District reminds you to BBQ safely! Please remember these steps for safe charcoal and ash disposal:

🔹To cool coals completely, place the lid on the barbecue, close all barbecue air vents, and leave the coals in the barbecue to cool for at least two days.

🔹Make sure the barbecue is at least 10 feet from anything combustible. After two days, the remaining ash can be discarded in the trash can.

🔹Need to use your barbecue again before the two-day cooling time has ended? Place all ash and remaining coals in a metal container such as a bucket or can and fill the container with water until the ash and coals are completely underwater. The ash will absorb the water and the cooled mixture can be discarded in the trash can.

🔹To quickly cool coals, apply water while the coals are still in the barbecue. Use caution as this will create steam that can cause burns. Transfer cooled coals to a metal container and let sit for two days to ensure coals are completely cooled.

🔹DO NOT RECYCLE OR DISCARD IN THE GREEN WASTE BIN. Charcoal briquettes and their ash are not suitable for composting.

This morning, Rancho Cucamonga Fire District personnel visited Maddie Cervantes’ school, which was recognizing Patriot’s Day, and walked alongside her in the parade. Maddie is Engineer Miguel Cervantes’ daughter. Miguel passed away on February 8, 2023, following a courageous battle against work-related non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma (NHL). Last year, Miguel escorted Maddie in the Patriot’s Day parade, and it was the last time he donned his uniform.

Maddie, like Miguel, has a resilient spirit and a contagious smile. We miss our brother Miguel dearly, but we find strength and comfort in seeing his spirit live on through his children.
