🌟 Where will the United Way team be this September? 🍂 As summer fades into fall, we're excited to be part of multiple amazing community events this month! 💙 Our team is ready to connect, share resources, and support our North State neighbors. We hope to see you out there—come say hello! 👋
🌟 Meet Lori McNeill from Civic Hacker Network 🌟
We're excited to spotlight Civic Hacker Network, a North State Equity Fund grantee making a real difference in the North State. 🎉 This local nonprofit connects a community of "civic hackers" using data and technology to drive positive social change.
Thanks to the NSEF grant, they've launched the History and Housing case study, uncovering and archiving the rich history of a Black neighborhood that once existed in Redding. Their work makes this history accessible to the public, raising awareness of the Black community's legacy in Redding and how it has evolved over time. 📚🏡

“Everyone has different struggles and timelines,” shares Hilary Crosby, a nonprofit administrator who works closely with people in recovery. In this video, she offers wisdom for individuals on the journey to recovery and their friends and family.
On the journey to recovery, consider:
Recovery doesn’t have to be “all or nothing”; it can look like making healthier choices one day at a time.
Find the right organization. If you are church-going or native, reach out to members in your community.
Find someone to go with you to a recovery meeting.
Be an advocate for someone struggling with substance use disorder.
If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use disorder, you’re not alone.
SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE:
Medication-assisted, spiritual, and community-based treatment and recovery options are available at 211norcal.org.
National Drug Help Line: 1-888-633-3239, drughelpline.org
National Substance Abuse and Mental Health Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357)
Rain is in the forecast again, California. 🌧️

United Way of Northern California (UWNC) is responding to the Park Fire, which has spread across large areas of Butte and Tehama counties, resulting in evacuation orders and warnings affecting thousands of residents. The fire is also threatening southern areas of Shasta County.
Gov. Newsom has declared a state of emergency for Butte and Tehama counties, as well as Plumas County, which has been impacted by the Gold Complex Fire. UWNC Disaster Team members are currently assisting evacuees from both fires. In addition, UWNC operates the 211 NorCal helpline (https://211norcal.org/), which provides free information and referrals 24/7/365 in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Tehama counties. Emergency authorities use 211 to convey to the public vital information on evacuation warnings and orders; shelter information, road closures, and more.
UWNC is urgently requesting donations that will pay for:
-Emergency Financial Assistance for evacuees
-Emergency Financial Assistance for those who lose their homes
-Information and referrals to services for those affected by the fires, including United Way programs and those of our partners
211 disaster operations
-Grants to partner agencies working on the ground to provide vital services to the public
-Administration and logistical costs necessary to provide vital support to the agency and its disaster services
United Way has responded to more than 20 wildfires in the North State since 2018, directly assisting at least 9,000 residents with millions of dollars in relief and recovery. Help us to be there again for our communities during this time of crisis. To donate, visit our website at https://www.norcalunitedway.org/ and click on the drop-down "Disaster Relief and Operations."

🌟 Good News from the Micro Shelter! 🌟
We are thrilled to share that Tammy, one of our amazing Micro Shelter residents, is moving out and into her own apartment! 🏠
After months of applying to apartments and investing over $500 in application fees, Tammy's perseverance has paid off. She found the Micro Shelter a year ago through friends and decided to apply. From the very start, she felt at home here, sharing, "they treat you like family here."
Tammy is excited to move forward and begin this new chapter in her life. She expressed, "I haven't had my own place in a long time”. The journey hasn't been easy, but with the support of the Micro Shelter, Tammy has achieved her goal. "Being on the streets you can't get nowhere. The Micro Shelter played a big role in my journey. It really works, it helps us a lot."
Congratulations, Tammy! We are so proud of you and excited for what the future holds! 🎉
Our Disaster Services Senior Program Specialist, Theresa Azevedo, teamed up with Nina Peay from Plumas Rural Services to distribute gift cards to evacuees from the Gold Complex fire in Quincy. As Nina said, “We might be two separate agencies, but together we are one team!” We’re grateful for our community partners and the opportunity to work hand in hand. 💙
