Map c. 1874. Engine facility was originally on a small island which around WWI, had the channel between there and the shore filled in. The B&A's roundhouse, the one pictured here, was closed in 1936.

Originally the village was called "Greenbush", hence the areas of North Greenbush and East Greenbush (and the railroad was the Troy & Greenbush). (If you look at the 1874 map, the south section was labelled Greenbush, the middle, East Albany, and the north end Bath or Bath-on-Hudson.) Around 1900, it was incorporated as a city and the name changed to Rensselaer. (I think I read it was because of possible confusion with Greenwich, etc.)
Painting is c. 1853, before any bridge to Albany was built. We are looking east and at this time, the Hudson River RR had entered the town. - jn
