College of Health Professions faculty, staff and students,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Amy Darragh, Ph.D., as dean of the VCU College of Health Professions, effective August 15, 2024. The Board of Visitors will officially consider the appointment at the June meeting.
Dr. Darragh comes to VCU from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where she has served as director and vice dean in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
With an extensive history of curricular and program development at the doctoral, master’s and undergraduate levels, Dr. Darragh has focused recent efforts on expanding the radiologic sciences and therapy programs in partnership with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to meet workforce demand; expanding online undergraduate and graduate offerings; and implementing an eSports and game studies undergraduate major. A licensed occupational therapist, Dr. Darragh has centered her teaching on dynamic learning environments, universal design principles, and psychological safety.
Her current research includes developing and testing novel pediatric and adult interventions that optimize patient outcomes while protecting caregiver health. Dr. Darragh’s recent work includes NIH-funded phase II and phase III clinical trials in pediatric neurorehabilitation and virtual simulation interventions for young adults and adults.
Her distinguished leadership, commitment to innovation, and strong collaborative vision make Dr. Darragh uniquely positioned to lead the College of Health Professions. I am confident that her extraordinary track record of academic and leadership success will help continue to build on the college’s stellar reputation.
My sincerest gratitude to Dr. Paula Song, who has served as interim dean for the last year and will return to her role as Chair of the Department of Health Administration.
Best wishes,
Marlon

The VCU Department of Radiation Sciences-College of Health Professions recently welcomed Heidy Palacios, MBA, as director and assistant professor, and Charlie Downing as clinical coordinator for the Nuclear Medicine Program.
Palacios and Downing admit the program may sound daunting, but they encourage prospective students to consider the field.
Palacios, who herself switched majors from chemistry to nuclear medicine as an undergraduate, says helping patients is why she entered nuclear medicine. "I wanted something that, for me, was more proactive, more helping patients. I had a passion for just being one-on-one with patients. That's how I went into nuclear medicine.”

Drs Timmerie Cohen and Melanie Dempsey recently presented at the Siemens Healthineers Orlando conference Their presentation "Factors Associated With Imaging of Nontraumatic Headaches in Emergency Departments" sparked a lively discussion on low yield imaging, ordering protocols, and the status of remote CT.
In the dynamic realm of emergency medicine, Computed Tomography (CT) has emerged as an indispensable tool with its remarkable attributes of widespread accessibility, rapid image acquisition, and its vital role in diagnosing and managing critical conditions. However, the judicious application of this technology remains pivotal, as concerns about overuse and escalating expenditures loom. This presentation delves into the intricacies of CT deployment, focusing on its utilization for nontraumatic headaches in emergency departments (EDs) within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
With an array of insights and data-driven analysis, this presentation seeks to uncover the rationale behind using CT scanning for adults with nontraumatic headaches in Virginia's EDs. Join us in unraveling the complexities of CT utilization in emergency medicine, as we navigate the intricacies of balancing technological capabilities, clinical necessities, and prudent resource management.
