We had a wonderful day at Central Library - Chesterfield County Public Library with our team from VCU Gerontology, Chesterfield County Virginia Government and Senior Connections VA hosting interviews and photography with amazing local centenarians for our project, "Home is Everything: Oral Housing Histories with Centenarians." Special thanks to the Social Security Administration for their support, the Chesterfield Office of Aging and Disabilities, and Chesterfield County Public Library for providing food, space, and the hard work to make this event successful. Thank you to Penelope Carrington for taking incredible photographs. And a huge heap of gratitude to the 11 centenarians, their families, and friends, who shared their stories and their time with us. Falls among older adults continue to be a national public health concern. Join NCOA Sept. 23-27, 2024, for Falls Prevention Awareness Week, a nationwide observance with state coalitions and partners to raise awareness on preventing falls, reducing the risk of falls, and helping older adults live without fear of falling.

The Lancet Commission has released their 2024 update. In this research, they have indicated that nearly half of all dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors. Additionally, they have added high LDL cholesterol and vision loss as new risk factors.

The Elder Justice Learning and Research Hub, at the Virginia Center on Aging at VCU has launched the Safety Connector to help elders, their caregivers, and service providers connect to community resources, supports, and positive relationships in order to prevent elder abuse and exploitation, and to reduce the fallout of experiencing either.

The Safety Connector was developed in partnership with Virginia Easy Access and No Wrong Door at the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services, with funding from the Administration for Community Living.

World Elder Abuse and Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2024

What? Half day, in person training to learn more about elder justice, preventing abuse, exploitation, mistreatment, and neglect in older adults.

Who? All are welcome to attend. Presentations will include information for community members, financial, healthcare, legal, and social work professionals.

*Registration is required for this free training. Certificates of attendance will be provided upon completion of an evaluation survey. 3 CEs for nursing and social work available. Law enforcement PIC pending approval.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 in 6 elders experience abuse. Here in Virginia, Adult Protective Services fields over 40 thousand reports of elder mistreatment, resulting in almost 13 thousand cases. What’s most startling: researchers have found that only 1 in 24 cases become known to authorities.

The Virginia Center on Aging is committed to ensuring that Virginia is a safe and loving place to grow old. We connect agencies and individuals with the knowledge and resources they need.

Our Story

The Department of Gerontology, founded in 1976, became a part of the School of Allied Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University in January 1985. The department is well-known for the quality and innovation of its programs and for the scholarship and applied expertise of its faculty. The Department of Gerontology offers a variety of degree programs based on an interdisciplinary approach using the bio-psycho-social model, including masters, doctoral, and certificate level. During the past five years, with a Core faculty five-member team, as a part of strong commitment to service and scholarship, the department has produced over 25 publications, 25 grant proposals, with approximately $2.5 million in grant funding. The VCU Gerontology department also has a strong commitment to education, as evidenced by about 100 Gerontology doctoral, masters and certificate students graduated in total, with over 97% retention rates. The Gerontology Department envisions continued commitment to service, scholarship, and education, with a focus on #DisruptAgeism paradigm.
