Reverence & Remembrance: Contextualizing the East Marshall Street Well Project

In 2010, students at the University of Virginia launched a design competition calling for proposals for a Memorial to Enslaved Laborers. Drawing on their example, VCUarts students like Cynthia Lane are designing their own speculative memorials to honor those uncovered at the EMSW and those who remain under the medical campus. Made of stainless steel with gold flames, the burning candles represent each individual and the need to keep their history and memory alive. The melting wax at the base emphasizes our connections—among the Ancestors, those left behind, and those living out their legacies.

As part of their broader recommendations for memorialization, the Family Representative Council called for a plaque to be installed near the entrance of the Kontos Building, where the Ancestral Remains were recovered. Creating signage to indicate the historical significance of the East Marshall Street Well, funded by VCU, will allow VCU and Richmond communities to recognize the history of the site and honor those who were not given the respect they are due. Each memorial offers a place of reverence and remembrance.
