It’s seaweed week!!! Kelp is becoming a great bumper crop for Maine lobstermen and fishermen that are catching or growing shellfish…
✋show of hands, how many of you out there are lobstermen growing kelp 🦞🌿OR are growing kelp with another shelled species 🌿🦪?

with .repost
・・・
Three reasons we're celebrating kelp farming this Seaweed Week:

🌿 Income in the off-season! 🌿 The growing season – late fall to early spring – makes kelp farming a great supplemental livelihood for lobstermen and diversifies the marine economy.

🌿 Ecosystem health! 🌿 Kelp helps reduce ocean acidification while providing a beneficial nursery habitat for many marine species. Did you know farmed mussels located within kelp farms produce stronger shells and larger meats than those reared outside the kelp?

🌿 Climate mitigation! 🌿 Kelp can pack a climate mitigation punch as a food additive for cows. A University of California at Davis study found a diet of just 1% seaweed led to a 67% reduction of methane emissions in dairy cows and up to an 80% reduction in beef cows.

Kelp: a win-win-win for coastal economies, ocean health, and the environment.
