Say hello to Raquel, a student originally from El Salvador. Raquel has been in the U.S. for four years, and she has taken ESL classes to improve her English for college. Here’s what Raquel has to say about her ESL classes:
“I really enjoyed taking this course because it made me feel welcome and comfortable. First of all, I thank my professor because she was a very patient and dedicated teacher. She was very professional and gentle when she was giving me her feedback about writing and grammar skills. Before I took this course my writing and grammar skills were very weak… she taught me how to use outlines, brainstorming, thesis statement, draft and self-revision. Now I can say that my writing and grammar has been improving. I have been learning a lot of vocabulary words, grammar rules, punctuation rules and transition words. Even though I still make some mistakes, I have learned a lot and that encourages me to continue learning. Finally, I feel more comfortable taking the placement test again and I am willing to keep walking until I can fulfill my goal of obtaining a certificate from Montgomery College.”

This is Anna, one of our ESL students. Anna is a piano teacher and has been in the U.S. for a year now. She has been taking classes at Montgomery College to improve her English for her teaching career. Here is what Anna says about our classes:
“I think ESL classes at Montgomery College significantly improved my English. I believe that I got a lot better at reading comprehension, using punctuation, and utilizing grammar rules in my writing. Additionally, I have learned a lot of new words and proper ways of using them. Also, writing essays in this class expanded my vocabulary and helped me with conveying my thoughts in a more organized manner. The classes had just the perfect amount of homework. I enjoyed being in my ESL classes, and I am looking forward to improving my English language skills in the next levels.”
It’s never too late to learn English. Join our summer ESL classes beginning in June.
Meet Kaby Gray, a student originally from Hong Kong. After working in various careers in Hong Kong and the U.S., Kaby has decided to pursue her dream of becoming a language interpreter. Here is what Kaby has to say about taking ESL classes at Montgomery College:
“I have enjoyed studying in ESL classes at Montgomery College. My professor was very professional and dedicated. I had a valuable learning experience in the class. I have learned many things in this class such as how to write essays, how to annotate readings, and how to improve English grammar. I learned to use the writing process by using brainstorming, outlining, self-revising and editing of drafts, and finalizing my final essays. I also learned how to annotate readings. For instance, I learned to use my own words or sentences to summarize what I read. In addition, I read many academic articles exploring topics of different subjects. Finally, I learned a lot of grammar. All in all, taking a reading and writing class was a valuable experience for me. The class taught me how to write good essays, how to annotate the readings, and how to improve grammar. I can see my English has improved after taking this class. I did not previously have confidence to write essays, but now I can write four-paragraph essays.”
It takes time and practice to gain confidence in speaking a new language. Learn and talk about all kinds of life topics in our conversation classes. Not only will you practice listening and speaking skills, you will also expand your vocabulary.

Learn more about our ESL classes. Our spring classes begin at the end of this month. Here’s a story of a recent student’s experience learning with us:
“Hi, my name is Alexa. I am from China, and I just finished my ESL 223: Reading and Writing 5 course at Montgomery College. I am very excited that I found a professional place to study English, and I have had a good time during the past few months when I studied at MC. Before studying at MC, I studied English at another place for several months. It was also a good place, but I thought I needed a more professional place to study. Because of the pandemic, I had a lot of time at home. I didn’t want to waste time just staying at home, so I decided to go back to school and learn in a new program. MC gave me the opportunity to accomplish my academic goals. After doing my placement for ESL courses, I started my class. It was a wonderful experience for me, and it reminded me of my time in college in China. I learned a lot and improved my academic English writing skills. For example, I learned how to organize an essay and how to use grammar correctly. My professor was very patient and professional. Also, I had many interesting classmates. They are all very nice people. I am looking forward to starting my next courses at Montgomery College.”

Learning English is often a top reason why people choose to study in the U.S. or participate in cultural exchange programs. We have many international students, au pairs, and individuals who are living in the U.S. for only a few years. You can maximize your English learning during this a temporary stay in the U.S. by taking ESL classes with Montgomery College. See what Isabela, a recent student and au pair from Brazil, has to say about the ESL course she recently completed with Montgomery College.
“I decided to take ESL223: Reading and Writing 5 in order to improve my English and prepare for the TOEFL exam. As I am an au pair and I have a busy routine, it was difficult for me to find a course that fit my schedule. I've always heard a lot about Montgomery College, and when I was searching for courses, I found this course was exactly what I needed. Distance learning met all my expectations. I had access to incredible material, and with the help of my instructor, I was able to improve my writing and reading a lot. I am very satisfied with this course.” -

Building confidence plays a big role in improving your overall language skills. While there are many ways you can practice and increase your confidence in using English on your own, read about how Montgomery College’s ESL classes have helped this student improve his English skills and confidence.
Assefa recently completed ESL 192: Communication Skills Level 5 and ESL 223: Reading and Writing 5. Here’s what he has to say about his experience taking classes with APPE:
“As I am not a native English speaker, I was afraid to speak English confidently because of the fear that people do not understand what I am saying. It was also frustrating being unable to engage in well-constructed conversations with native people. A couple of times, I used various resources such as YouTube, music, TV shows, and newspapers to improve my English proficiency, but it did not help me much. That is why I decided to register for ESL classes at MC college. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made. The way the syllabi are designed was fantastic. My appreciation towards the courses' professors is beyond what words can express. They are very patient and always ready to answer any questions. They helped me build my confidence in speaking English without any fears.
I have gained lots of knowledge from ESL classes. To mention some, I have learned how one can understand the meaning of difficult words from sentences and how to pronounce complex words just like an American. Furthermore, I have also learned that how to produce a good summary of a topic, write a thesis statement or topic sentence, and use proper grammar and tense.
In general, taking ESL courses helped me improve my English skills considerably. I am also grateful that Montgomery College has made online studies available for people like me who want to improve their English speaking and writing skills as well as pursuing their dreams.”
For those of you working on improving your academic English skills so that you can begin the credit program at MC, meet Nuha, one of our spring semester ESL students who will be transitioning from the non-credit program to the credit program. We’re very proud of you, Nuha!
Here’s what Nuha has to say about her experience taking online classes with APPE:
“I used to be skeptical about online classes, but that thought changed when I took Intermediate Writing 2 online. I had such a wonderful experience, and I definitely think that there are a lot of advantages to an online class. One of the advantages that I felt is flexibility. It allows me to arrange my time so that it fits with my other activities. Another huge advantage is social skills. I was a lot more comfortable communicating with other people and socializing with each one of them through Zoom. Lastly, the class environment is very engaging. It made me want to learn more and more every time I attended class. Moreover, the teacher made the experience so fun that I was able to understand things quickly. All in all, I had such an amazing experience and I would recommend anyone to take one of these online classes.”
