We are a group of Texans of Belgian heritage/lineage who meet to celebrate our culture and keep in touch with other Belgian families.
Our club was invited to participate in Castroville Founder’s Day, on September 14, at the Castroville Regional Booth. Along with our Flemish Folkdancers, we had a food booth that featured Belgian Waffles loaded with ice cream, straberries, and whipped cream. We also offered root beer floats, ice cream in a cone or cup, and sundaes with choice of topping. Money raised at our both went to our Scholarship Fund.
Thanks to Debbie Hooge and Kathleen Wurn for the photos.
A tragic story. Carlota was from Belgium, the origen of my husband's family. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Van DeWalle Persyn, made a delicious dessert called Vloen, handed down through generations of Flemish ancestors. Carlota took that recipe to Mexico while Maximilian was Emperor. She taught the cooks how to make it. They called it Flan! From Flanders!!
Thank you, Linda Cooper Persyn, for posting this on your page.

Does anyone know if the Root Beer Float has anything to do with our Belgian Heritage. I know we served/sold it at Folk Life, but was wondering why.
Does anyone remember Cap’n Gus coming to Vegetable Day?

This is the second year the BACT has participated in the King William’s Fair. Since the Folklife Festival has closed, the club has chosen the Fair to promote our heritage and raise money to fund our activities. If you would like to be involved next year, let us know thru Messenger.
Congratulations to one of our scholarship recipients, Matthew Williams, son of Susan and Mike Williams. First time wearing his senior boots! It is quite an accomplishment.

Did you attend the Belgian Heritage Festival?
Did you see a “Rolle Bolle” Tournament going? Do you want to know what the Rolle Bolle is?
While the exact timeframe is unknown, Rolle Bolle was created in the Flanders region of Belgium before the 20th century. The game immigrated to the United States sometime in the 19th century.
It is essentially bowling but with some different rules. There are two videos attached, parts one and two, from our friends at Schattenbol who describe how to play Rolle Bolle perfectly!
We have a Rolle Bolle tournament once a year at our Belgian Heritage Festival in March. We hope to see you next year!

It was a beautiful day for our Belgian Heritage Festival at Schattenbol at DeCock Farm. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. These are just a few of the photos. More to be posted later.
A special thank you to our Sponsors, who help fund this event and contribute to our Educational Scholarship Fund! And thanks to all are helpers. Not sure how we could do any of this without you.
May he rest in peace 🙏

If you have any extra plants you would like to donate to our Farmer’s Market, please let Kathleen Wurn know. We will have nursery bought plants, vegetable and flower, but we would like ones that don’t “cost us anything.” Spoken like a true Belgian, right?
More items for the Silent Auction. Both of these were made and donated by Brenda Weinstrom Michael. She is so talented and has made several items for our previous silent auctions.
