“Success is not measured by the number of championships won, but by the impact you have on others.” - Bill Walton

Today, the YMCA of San Diego County mourns the significant loss of Bill Walton, a legendary athlete, inspirational community leader, donor, volunteer, and charismatic motivator. His boundless generosity and unwavering determination have left an incredible mark on San Diego.

Bill's legacy at the Y is profound, and we are grateful to have had his light shined upon us. Bill was an active member of our Mission Valley YMCA for many years, enjoying aqua therapy regularly, which he attributed to his well-being. Members often recall how his infectious enthusiasm and positive attitude had the power to uplift everyone around him. In addition to his significant contributions to the community spirit, Bill's unique sense of humor left an indelible mark at the Mission Valley YMCA. A testament to his playful side is the extra tall showerhead installed within the locker room, complete with a sign per Bill's request, noting the shower is for tall people. This quirk brings smiles to the faces of many members and stands as a lasting tribute to his fun-loving nature.

In honor of Bill Walton's memory, we reaffirm our commitment to uphold his values of community service, passion, and empathy for youth development through sports. His legacy will continue to thrive through the countless lives he touched and the positive changes he inspired. We are deeply grateful to have had Bill as part of our Y family and extend our heartfelt condolences to his entire family and community of friends.

In honor of Memorial Day and Military Appreciation Month, we want to recognize the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. We also want to spotlight one of our members, Nick, who currently serves in the Navy. Nick has been a member of the Y for several years, and after getting stationed in San Diego, he considers the Y his home away from home.

Hear his Y story and take a moment to remember, honor, and appreciate the contributions made by our military members. Their bravery and selflessness ensure the freedoms we cherish today. Thank you for your service!

Today marked a special moment at our Y as we convened the end-of-fiscal-year Board of Governors meeting. This gathering was not just a “meeting of the minds” but a celebration of dedication and leadership, particularly honoring volunteer Fred Sotelo. With a remarkable 4-year term as our Association Board of Governors Chair, Fred’s contributions have been immeasurable. Beyond his role on the Association Board, Fred is a committed Jackie Robinson Family YMCA board member and has played a pivotal role in the Southeast San Diego flood relief efforts. His leadership and passionate advocacy have been instrumental in mobilizing support and raising awareness for vital community needs. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Fred for his years of service and the lasting impact he will continue to have on the San Diego community!

PS: We’re on the case to replace Fred’s recognition award after it swiftly slipped from his hands and broke—proof that even in moments of planned recognition, surprises can happen!
