CCSC's Families In Transition Program

FIT Day - Ice Skating 03/26/2019
03/09/2019

This week we had set goals for homework completion within the program hours. We got a glance at their semester grades and were able to have one on one conversations with each of the students. We also discussed studying methods and habits students could use as well as talking with them to see how they could improve their grades!

This day we had students exercise their brains! We brought to the table some puzzles and had the students compete with each other on who can take apart and recreate the puzzles. In addition we had students who were adamant about completing their homework, and in order to complete their coursework we provided them with a quiet area as well, and were seated so that the program coordinators would be close enough to answer any questions!

2/2 Dumpling Workshop 02/15/2019

Today our students learned how to make dumplings! As they arrived, they were told to wash their hands and find a space on that table. Afterwards, they were given the ingredients and were instructed on how to create the dumpling and had a go at it themselves. Most of the dumplings were made as instructed, though others with just a tad bit too much salt. Aside from that, all the students enjoyed eating their dumplings and hopefully they're take this home and make some for their family!

Thanksgiving is almost upon us! However, to celebrate, CCSC held a friendsgiving lunch today and they have invited the FIT students. We had 20 students from Lincoln, Galileo, and Washington High School come to enjoy the food! Beforehand, the students had assisted in setting up the tables and chairs, and once completed they gathered around a table to start eating! Everyone got a huge amount of food, and after they finished their first plate they got more!

In addition, our FIT program is transitioning from academics to identity. As so, we asked our students to come help organize our CCSC office! Students were split into groups and were given a multitude of tasks, from organizing boxes to moving boxes into a storage room! By having this area organized, we plan on dedicating the floor to FIT students from high schools we plan on assisting, such as Lincoln, Galileo, Washington, Balboa, and Marshal! These students will be able to meet on this floor and complete projects, gather for presentations, and hang out!

For the start of the new school year, we gathered students from both Abraham Lincoln High School and Galileo Academy of Science and Technology for a FIT bonding, via a picnic! Everyone gathered around the field to start their barbecue, and we had introduced everyone to each other. We also played a variety of games to have the students get to know each other more, like capture the flag, two truths and one lie, and minefield! Students enjoyed the picnic and it was nice to see everyone getting together!

Today was the Lights on After-School event! Students gathered to create a small collage with their drawings and writings on it! Everyone that participated set their creativity to the max, and throughout the project students immersed themselves in their writings!

Every year our FIT program volunteers at a Halloween event at Stonestown. The students had a variety of activities to be done, and everyone was assigned to different groups. Our FIT participants were split between groups that had students from other high schools, and together they developed their communication and team work skills! By the end of the day students enjoyed themselves in the activities they have done and made many new friends!

New school year. New start! Students have completed their first day of school to come to us, and we have began introducing ourselves for the school year of 2018-2019! After a couple of ice breakers we started discussing our goals for this year and we're confident the students will follow through!

Summer Interns with SFUSD's CTE and C*C's MYEEP programs 08/17/2018

During this summer, we expanded our youth programming by working with multiple partners -- San Francisco Unified School District ( ) Career Technical Education (CTE) program, Jewish Vocational Service ( ), and C*C's Mayor's Youth Employment and Education Program ( ).

With SFUSD's CTE program, youths from various high schools helped our culinary program in putting a catering plan together.

For JVS, we outreached to many of the High School students during their Apprenticeship 101 workshop at CCSF Evans Campus. Many of them got a chance to talk to our current CityBuild Academy students and learn about the trades.

Lastly, with C*C's MYEEP program, Galileo youths came to intern with us. Through the 6 week program, they learned how to work in a professional setting as well as helped with filing and copying.

Thank you all who has contributed to our center this summer! Special thanks to Anne Yalon and Bernadette Frias from SFUSD, Michelle from JVS, and Mei and Daphne from C*C for connecting the youths and making this possible!

On a sunny day, our FIT students visited SF State and USF. The school ambassadors from each school gave our students a brief tour around their campus. Our students gained a lot of great information about the school resources and admission for each school. They found the information is really useful.

At the end of the year, we hand out certificates of completion to those in our program who both come every day and volunteer at almost all our events! We'd like to thanks those in our program and those who support our program in some of our difficulties, and for those students who have yet to graduate we hope to see you in this program in the next school year!

Photos from CCSC's Families In Transition Program's post 06/18/2018

They did it! Congrats to the graduating seniors from both schools! Graduation might have taken longer than was expected, but hey, you all did well to get where you are! We plan on checking back with you on your future path, and best of luck to you all at your respective colleges!

Having finished the school year, our students are awarded with a field trip to Great America! They had plenty of fun and were given free reign of where they would like to go and what rides to ride! A fun day overall and the students were a little sad about leaving, though there's always another time to come back!

Chinatown Branch Library Activities and Workshops 05/05/2018

Likewise to the Parkside Branch volunteering, our volunteers help out and participate in the other programs held by the library. Because of this, our volunteers get to try out different activities that can expand their knowledge and hopefully guide them towards a major they would love.

Chinatown Branch Teen Tech 05/05/2018

Every first Saturday of the month, our students come to the Chinatown Branch Public Library to volunteer with their teen tech program. There they assist in educating their community how to use different devices, as well as troubleshoot any issues they might have.

SFPL Parkside Branch Activities 05/05/2018

On the last Friday of the month, participants wait in the library for different tasks to be completed, and they participate in a variety of activities. Some activities include learning the many uses of a rubber band, push-pin making, and exploring different cultures through their foods.

FIT & SFUSD ESL program Joint Tour of CCSF Evans Campus 03/12/2018

This past Saturday, our FIT youth program formed a joint tour with SFUSD ESL program for a tour of CCSF Evans Campus. We were able to introduce to the students many hands-on work vocational training opportunities from the Construction Industries to auto repairs. We got a chance to go over the many different programs available such as the CityBuild program to get into a Union apprenticeship to earn a college degree and get a good paying job, and the Auto A.S. degree pathway program. It was a good outing and also give the students something to think about when they graduate from High School.

Special Thanks to Cindy from SFUSD, Nick and Francis from CCSF Evans, and Deon from the Deans office at CCSF Ocean Campus to help us organize the tour.

2018 First day of FIT after school. Everyone is excited about this semester. It is the last semester for all our seniors. 2018 we are coming!

01/05/2018

Hello 2018! Happy new year from FIT!

01/02/2018

Our students met up at the Marin Food Bank to help set everything up! As a small group, our students were put into a group where they were to pack a pound of beans into a bag. As things were a little shaky early, after some training on how to both read the scale and how to seal the bag everything became much smoother. Overall, our group packed close to 4000 pounds of beans!

01/02/2018

Our "End of the Year" Party! We allowed our students to relax and have fun, eating while playing different games with each other. Additionally, a White Elephant activity was held as a small Christmas Meetup! After all this, we did an after-activity review to discuss the school year, what they liked about it and what they didn't like about it. They also discussed their goals for the next school semester!

12/27/2017

FIT cooking class - Students spent the afternoon learning how to make Vietnamese Spring Rolls today! After learning how to prepare the ingredients our students were making their own spring rolls and eating their creations!

12/15/2017

Our students are taking their time to complete their homework and study for their finals! As finals week is stressful, students try to cram in different information in order to pass their test. We thought that to be easier, we have them complete their homework slowly and work on a subject a day, that way we allow the new information to sink into the students! Overall a great week and we hope that the students completed their finals smoothly!

12/15/2017

1 more school day til finals week! Our students studied diligently throughout the session and after they had finished their homework they continued to study!

12/09/2017

Due to the nearing finals week, participants took a break from studying to keep active, playing basketball against each other. The following day, participants also visited the CCSC Office to finish their college apps and talk about what they looked forward to now that they're done.

11/03/2017

Our students this day have worked on their observation abilities! Lights Off is an escape room that our students have done where they look around the room for puzzles and solve them. Our students took their time looking carefully, making sure to practice not skipping over any details, and used teamwork to complete difficult puzzles to get out of the escape room! This event tested the student's ability to cooperate and observe and the students performed well!

11/03/2017

Our students in their studying session. Being in the cafeteria, Our participants are diligently reading their books and completing their homework. For those with slight difficulty in completing their homework, we're here to help them. In some cases, our students have full knowledge on what to do and how to do it, and watching our students focusing on their education always pleases us!

During the summer, our FIT Program Youth volunteer and support the California Dragon Boat Association with boat maintenance at Lake Merced. They get a chance to the experience the sport and some of the students were interested in joining in their High School.

Want to give a big shout out to Jessica Chen and her youth volunteers from the Charity Cultural Services Center for coming out to Lake Merced yesterday. They helped clean, sand and varnish two BuK boats in preparation for practices leading up to the Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival.
