Teachers make what we do possible. Every day, educators like Kelly Vann Thorpe quietly make a difference. Kelly believed in the power of fitness and the difference it made in a child's ability to learn. Kelly would always volunteer and speak up for her school and students' needs ... Kelly knew her actions and voice made a difference. They did, and her voice will continue through other teachers who use their voices and come to GROW for support. Rest in peace, sweet Kelly. GROW loves you!

What are educators saying ...
Thank you, GROW Healthy Kids. Your partnership has helped my students, both boys and girls from diverse backgrounds, who arrive in our country with little or no resources to start their new journeys. Your donation is giving my students the chance to attend school on a daily basis and wear comfortable shoes! Their smiles while receiving these shoes are worth a million dollars and a big joy in my heart! I am so grateful to all of you for this wonderful mission!

Many lifelong lessons are learned on the playground during recess. Thanks to our partners with the Ocoee Police Department and Healthy West Orange, the Citrus Elementary School Resource Officer was able to help GROW distribute recess supplies to each class. During the visit, students learned about good civic behaviors they can practice during play: waiting their turn, including others, sharing toys, talking, and problem-solving while playing. All the tiny seeds we plant today will become amazing pillars in the future.

Our Story

GROW stands for: Grass Roots Outreach Within

Our goal is to help develop the healthiest children in Central Florida by supporting grass roots wellness initiatives.

Mission:
To make a positive difference in children's lives by increasing opportunities for healthy living.

Objective:
•To promote environments that support children's health and wellbeing
•To optimize and empower volunteers who support initiatives that increase physical activity and or focus on preventing childhood obesity

Priority Areas:
Seminole County
•Supporting the Seminole County Public School elementary cross county program
•Providing resources for programs that increase opportunities for physical activity and healthy living

History:
The efforts behind GROW Central Florida, Inc. started in 2009 by parent volunteer Colleen Gonzalez. Over seven years she worked to support elementary school volunteers throughout Seminole County with the non-district funded cross country running program. The free running program serves over 4,600 students (age 5-12). Although the program runs 100% on donations, one hurdle that always came up was Colleen and the cross country program did not have a 501(c)3 nonprofit designation.

In 2015, Colleen decided to set up a non-profit to formally support the grass roots volunteers in Seminole County.
