The Rusty Skipper Band made its debut in 1995 as part of the Cohasset Harborfest, at the enthusiastic suggestion of the late Rev. Ed Atkinson of First Parish in Cohasset. Fourteen adults marched in the parade that first year, and we were a ragtag group. Despite Rev. Atkinson’s sudden death that summer, or perhaps in his honor, the band continued, and since 1996, the Rusty Skipper Band has grown steadily, in numbers of musicians and performances, as well as in scope and difficulty of music and quality of musicianship. Yet we remain a quintessential community band.

“As the Historical Society nears completion of our restoration of the Cudworth House we are grateful to the Scituate Garden Club beautiful restoration of the Cudworth Herb Garden. This garden, first designed and planted as an 18th century herb and flower garden by the Garden Club in 1963, has been loveingly maintained by members for the last 61 years!

We hope people will stop by the property (331 First Parish Rd. next to the Senior Center and former Gates School) and see the garden.“

PLYMOUTH COLONY FIRST LADY PENELOPE WINSLOW Re-Imagining a Life

Penelope Pelham Winslow was one of the most powerful women in Plymouth Colony’s history. A member of the English gentry (her third-great-grandmother was Anne Boleyn’s sister Mary), she was married to King Philip’s War-era Governor Josiah Winslow. Like most of her female contemporaries, however, she has largely been forgotten.

Historian and author Michelle Marchetti Coughlin recovers the story of Winslow’s eventful life tracking fragmentary records and surviving physical evidence and offers fresh insight into the experiences of women in early New England.

Today was what some in seaside towns call a chamber of commerce day. 80 plus degrees, a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. What makes it even better, the scaffolding is down making it one step closer to completion.

Keep watching for details on the August 7th, National Lighthouse Day, lighting celebration.

January 8, 2024 Lighthouse renovations update from Jim Boudreau, Town Administrator

We had anticipated starting the grouting of the brick work today. However, with the storm over the weekend and more impact weather forecast for later this week, we have postponed the grouting work. We will be having discussions with the contractor and our design team as to whether we should delay the grouting entirely until storm season passes and we have warmer weather. The grout must be kept above freezing for 10-14 days from
completion of the work. We are not sure if Mother Nature will cooperate. If a decision is made to put off the grout work, it will be completed in the spring when we do the painting.
