New Innovation Lab Created Artwork - See pics
Each summer, our department welcomes a select group of young adults for six-week internships funded by the City of Seattle's Youth Employment Program (SYEP). These interns engage in a variety of projects, ranging from preparing our laboratories for the upcoming academic year to developing robotics and coding initiatives. One of the standout final projects by two interns involved the impressive creation of 3D artwork designed to enhance the Bannan stairway. It is hoped that the artwork will transform the previously dull and drab stairway into a fun and engaging path. Additionally, the coding for the Aeterna Mutatio (Eternal Change) artwork piece was updated and installed. Some of these pieces creatively incorporate both modern and antique electronics, repurposing them in innovative ways to prevent them from ending up in a landfill.

Doesn't your mother deserve a printed circuit board designed and soldered by her son or daughter? Bryan Cheong was not an idle son like me. He designed a PCB with a flashing running LED message for all our mothers and set up and led the Mother's Day soldering workshop! Enjoyable! Thank you, Bryan. It is far better than giving mom another card or coffee mug for Mother's Day. Time well spent & batteries included!

*****PCB Design Club Friday workshop series is led by student Wai Nam Lo (Austin), a human whose abilities are highly regarded by the collective *****
MEET A PROFESSIONAL: ECE students gathered in their lounge to engage in conversation with Scott Moser from Rivian, the EV manufacture! Free Rivians given away to everyone that attended...? Their discussions spanned various topics, including the life of an engineer, job applications, and pursuing further education. A notable topic of debate was the choice between using a CPU and an FPGA for critical systems like brake control and collision avoidance. Which would you trust more for the timing of these functions, a CPU or an FPGA-SOC?
This week, the PCB club is advancing their oscilloscope board projects under Austin's leadership. They're also demonstrating how to solder a Raspberry Pi board they developed last year. Everyone is pointing at Bryan because he was bold enough to install the tiny RP2040 microcontroller, which comes in a compact QFN-56 7×7mm package.
You’re Hired! Are You Ready to Design Your First Product?
What Hiring Managers Look For
Hiring managers seek new hires with hands-on design experience who can hit the ground running, requiring minimal training to successfully fulfill the position. The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design Club is about designing products and preparing you for your first day on the job!
Textbooks, in certain aspects, have changed little since the 1980s. The instruction given on resistors (resistance), capacitors (capacitance), inductors (inductance), and power dissipation occurs in isolation from the context of the PCB or silicon. However, the PCB, with its network of connecting traces and power planes, encapsulates all these aspects! Especially in today's high-speed digital or sensitive analog circuits. When integrated with components, the PCB creates a complex, interconnected system. This system's elements interact in sophisticated ways, significantly affecting the product's overall performance and functionality. There's a substantial gap between merely learning textbook facts and truly comprehending product or system design.
To bridge this gap, gaining practical experience through relevant, real-world club projects is essential, providing valuable content to enrich your resume. And the club projects are pretty cool!

In the Internet of Things (IoT) course, a student team took on an innovative project to map air quality at Yes Farm, an urban farming initiative in the Yesler neighborhood of Seattle. The project's goal was to assess the impact of environmental factors like wildfires, construction, and highway traffic on air quality.
Using a Dylos Air Quality Monitor and a mobile device for GPS coordinates, the team gathered data on PM2.5 and PM10 levels across the farm. This data were then visualized on a map using a Python language coded script, providing valuable insights into air quality variations in the area. This hands-on project, which combined technology and environmental awareness, reflects the practical application of IoT course concepts in addressing real-world challenges by students. And it is plain fun to work with local communities and technology.
In the Internet of Things (IoT) course, a student team developed an IoT security system for the Danny Woo Community Garden, located in the Chinatown International District in urban Seattle.
This project's aim is to tackle security issues like unauthorized access and vandalism using IoT technologies. The system we used is based on a Raspberry Pi microcomputer board, included camera modules for surveillance, motion sensors, and a notification app with pictures. A goal is to power it by solar panels, highlighting a sustainable approach. This endeavor not only addressed real-world problems for us, but also provided practical experience in integrating IoT solutions, reflecting the course's application-oriented learning.
In the Internet of Things (IoT) course, a student team worked on a local community project involved developing a solar-powered soil moisture monitoring system for Yes Farm, a Seattle urban farming initiative.
The project’s aim is to improve water management and crop health through sustainable technology-driven farming practices. This project enabled us to overcome practical challenges, such as integrating sustainable technology in agriculture. It was a direct application of the IoT concepts learned in the course, enhancing our understanding through hands-on experience in solving actual problems using IoT technologies.
Key electronics and coding included an ESP-32 microcomputer board for data collection, a soil moisture sensor, a solar panel for power, and a Wi-Fi module for data transmission. The system supported Yes Farm's mission of community engagement and enhancing the efficiency of urban farming and resource management.
Students in the ECEGR-2000 course, 'Physical Computing with Python,' were given four weeks to design, implement, and demonstrate their own “products”. Their products could be a game or an interactive practical tool, utilizing technologies such as Raspberry Pi single-board computers, vision and object recognition, Wi-Fi and internet connectivity, Raspberry Pi audio capabilities, and more.
Creativity and practical problem-solving were strongly emphasized in these products. The results were impressive, showcasing electronics combined with student Python language coded applications. As a reward for their innovative efforts, students were treated to a delightful surprise: actual, edible Raspberry Pies made by Professor Eddy!
Special thanks to all the students for their dedication and hard work, as well as the support from their peers and faculty.
Eddy Ferré
