Thank you to everyone who came out to the Seattle Design Festival - and those who participated in “WHAT IF - Kids Designed Their Own Playgrounds?” The pop-up was a great success, with kids and adults alike having fun assembling and designing their imagined playscapes out of found objects (from !) sandbox, and some kraft paper. So many great and inspiring ideas captured and shared here!

As part of the BE Studio this quarter (Restorative Urbanism in South Seattle), we are hosting Paul Bauknight next Monday-Wednesday (5/13-15). In addition to working with the BE Studio students, Paul is hosting two events on Spatial and Design Justice – a student-only workshop on Monday at noon (lunch provided) and an evening lecture Monday night at 6:00. Paul is a dynamic and enthusiastic advocate, activist, practitioner, and educator - we hope you will join for one or both events. Please register at the links below.

Land, Housing, Injustice - a student workshop with Paul Bauknight
Monday, May 13th , 12:00-1:00 pm in Gould Hall 100 – lunch provided.

How has the intersectionality of land and housing created and maintained injustice in America? From indigenous removal, colonization, slavery, migration, and civil rights, land and housing have shaped and continues to shape our cities and communities in inequitable, exclusive, and unjust ways. We will explore the intersection of culture, policy, racism, capitalism, and the built environment. Paul Bauknight, the founder and president of the Center for Transformative Urban Design, is a Spatial and Design Justice advocate, activist, practitioner, and educator. Register here ➡️ https://buff.ly/3JZ5SpL

Radically Imagining Spatial Justice: What can you do to work toward creating more justice for everyone? - a lecture by Paul Bauknight
Monday, May 13th, 6:00-7:30pm in Gould Hall Auditorium (room 322)

What is spatial justice? How can we radically imagine futures where our cities are just, inclusive, and equitable? What unique skills do designers possess and need to develop to facilitate the ultimate creation of these futures? How do we work singularly and collectively raising our voices to foster change? Paul Bauknight, the founder and president of the Center for Transformative Urban Design, is a Spatial and Design Justice advocate, activist, practitioner, and educator.

We did it! Yesterday you helped unlock all of CBE's challenges and together we surpassed the college's goal of $28,000 and raised $31,195* and counting!

Once again you’ve demonstrated the impact we have when our community comes together. We appreciate your support in its many forms. Your generosity will allow the Office of Student Services to continue delivering an exceptional CBE student experience.

Thank you for supporting the College of Built Environments and ensuring our mission lives on!

Reaching over 200 middle and high school students a year, Youths in the Built Environment is yet another program supported by the Office of Student Services.

The CBE Student Success Fund has provided materials that significantly enhance youths' learning and understanding of the built environment. Being able to provide accessible programming for the youths is deeply meaningful to the students who participate. On-site learning helps bring the built environment to the forefront of these students' minds when it comes to making an impact on their community.

While Husky Giving Day is coming to a close, there’s still time to make a meaningful impact on the lives of CBE students and the greater community!

At CBE, student-led affinity groups like Somos CBE (Latine Students), Fil-Am Sa CBE (Filipino Students), Sahā CBE (Indian Students), BIPOC Students Affinity Group, and the International Students Affinity Group serve as a vital space for those with underrepresented identities to connect, create spaces of belonging, and thrive.

"As Chair of the BIPOC Students Affinity group, CBE has been a tremendous support. With the help of these funds, I’ve been able to grow the BIPOC Affinity Group community and begin planning programs such as alumni panels and dinner socials. These programs are integral to showing CBE BIPOC students there is an entire community of peers, alumni, and professionals who want to help support each other and make us feel less isolated in such a big industry."
-Rachel L.

By supporting our affinity groups, you are investing in initiatives that empower students, amplify diverse voices, and create a more inclusive environment for all.

There's only a few more hours to make a difference! https://buff.ly/3PM4A4L

Mentorship matchmaking is one of the many ways the Office of Student Services supports student professional development and networking. Programs like CBE’s Mentorship Program help students grow in their chosen field through one-on-one guidance, advice, and insight from a professional mentor. Your contributions to the CBE Student Success Fund help the program reach its goal of providing a mentor to every CBE student wanting guidance from a CBE graduate and/or industry professional.

For the winter quarter's Drawing in Design workshop students from a variety of disciplines including landscape architecture, and planning came together to let out their inner child with Raven Juarez ( ).

Students were led through a series of freeform sketching and crafting exercises that encouraged them to unleash their playfulness through their art. These exercises underscored the importance of expression in artistry, and how reconnecting with your inner child can facilitate that.

Come checkout the amazing pieces from this workshop on display on the third floor of Gould Hall (to the right of the BE Library)!

LARCH 498C will focus on the professional practice of community engagement and how to leverage it as a tool for strengthening place-based communities. We'll deep-dive into social psychology to understand the essence of community, our current social crises (polarization, lonliness, etc.), and the process for bridging identity-groups. We will hear from real-world practitioners and take a critical eye to how community engagement is practiced professionally in the built environment disciplines. And we will learn lots of practical tools, like how to design an outreach process and how to facilitate a community meeting.

This past weekend, the Burke Meadow Team, and many volunteers, worked to weave ‘baskets’ with whips of willow and dogwood to protect newly emerging camas from rabbit browsing. This workshop was held as an ongoing effort by the Meadow Team to implement indigenous practices into the landscape at the Burke Museum Camas Meadow Garden ( ).

Many thanks to the coordinators ( ) and volunteers who came out to make this happen!

Three graduate students working on a group capstone project focused on proactively preventing pollution from entering the Duwamish River attended a tour of the Georgetown Wet Weather Treatment Station. The students learned about the environmental and social significance of the facility and toured each stage of the primary and secondary water treatments. The event was hosted by The Seattle 2030 District, a public-private partnership of property owners and managers, services stakeholders, and community stakeholders. This network seeks to reduce all building energy consumption, building water consumption, and transportation GHG emissions by 50% by 2030.

At the end of our Fall quarter, Youth in the Built Environment hosted two high school student groups on campus from the Highline Public School district in Seattle.
Students learned about the college of the built environment and had a chance to do some hands-on activities. Students also had the opportunity to talk to current undergraduate and graduate students about the programs they are in and what they want to do with their degree during panel discussions.
Check out some of the amazing work the students made while visiting us at UW!

Join the Giving Tuesday movement by making a contribution to the Landscape Architecture Fund for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion today! This student-initiated fund helps to financially support a wide range of programs in UW//LA oriented toward issues of justice in design education and, more broadly, EDI-oriented work within the field of landscape architecture.

Give: https://buff.ly/47TOnkq

It is the hope of current UW//LA students that this funding source will continually support individuals from underrepresented communities in the field of landscape architecture, that it affirms the UW//LA Department’s commitment to justice and equity, and that it will identify impactful programs that would thrive with dedicated long-term funding.

Thank you for supporting us and our future change-makers in the built environment.
