Dr. Jon Marashi is a renowned industry leader and innovator for cosmetic dentistry. His loyal clientele includes a roster of A-list actors, musicians, athletes and Hollywood executives. However he started his journey out like most dentists: broke and stressed.
In the UW Continuing Dental Education lecture coming up on Saturday, April 20 titled “From Broke Dental Student to Dentist to the Stars to $1 Billion Exit!”, Dr. Marashi will share what key decisions he made to change his fate from average dentist to a thriving celebrity practitioner. He’ll then share how he took that knowledge and applied it to business ventures that led to a One Billion Dollar, all-cash, exit.
The lecture will also feature Dr. Marashi’s CPA, Michelle Blake, who will share important information for optimizing financial health in dental practice and the dental professional’s life.
Truly a lecture you won’t want to miss, make sure to register today. The course is free for all students and residents: https://dental.washington.edu/condented/from-broke-dental-student-to-dentist-to-the-stars-to-1-billion-dollar-exit/

Congratulations to the UW SOD Class of 2021!!!
Congratulations, Dr. Donald Leslie Chi!
In the past, many medical and dental professionals assumed that children with cystic fibrosis (CF) were protected from developing cavities and other oral health problems because of the amount of antibiotics they take, but that assumption has recently come under scrutiny. This spring, Dr. Donald Chi of the UW School of Dentistry’s Oral Health Sciences department and Dr. Margaret Rosenfeld of Seattle Children's Hospital received a $3.8 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) to study how oral health affects long-term respiratory outcomes in adolescents with CF. Dr. Chi and his team, with the help of researchers from the University of North Carolina and the University of Alabama, will conduct tests three times over 24 months to analyze the links between oral diseases, such as cavities and gingivitis, and respiratory outcomes for patients with CF.
While the grant was awarded recently, Dr. Chi says the idea for this project actually came to him about 10 years ago when he read a claim that kids with CF don't develop cavities. From his initial observation, Dr. Chi began analyzing existing data on oral health in adolescents with CF. While trying to obtain a grant for a research project, he and his colleagues conducted a pilot study which led to the initial hypothesis that as children with CF get older, their tooth decay rates may not only start to match that of other children, but might actually be higher. After almost three years and several attempts, Dr. Chi and his team finally received funding from NIDCR and will begin his study this fall.
