Our students have such cool adventures!
Reposted from Spotlight on GHIP! Our MS2s Randi Perry (Seattle) and Emilio Hernández (Montana) spent their summer in the Dominican Republic! Here’s what Randi has to say about their experience:
iQué lo qué, desde la Republica Dominicana!
What an adventure we’ve had, studying the barriers and facilitators to effective communication between patients and providers here at la Clinica de Familia, la Romana. Between clinic days we’ve found time to outrun a hurricane through the flooded streets of la Romana, explore local beaches, dive the local reefs, explore flooded caves and climb the highest peak in the Caribbean! Hope everyone is finding their own adventures out there this summer!

WWAMI students do so many interesting things in the summer! Reposted from This summer, MS2 Jessica Begley engaged in her III Scholarship of Discovery research at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY, alongside Dr. Danielle Bruns’s Cardiac Aging Lab. Her research project, which she’ll present during the Triple I Poster Session later this fall, encompasses determining the temporal development of heart failure in estropausal mice.
Alongside Wyoming WWAMI E23 medical student Sabrina Gay, Jessica learned to perform and analyze cardiac ultrasound on mice with heartbeats of > 500 and assist with vitrectomy surgeries.
When Jessica wasn’t in the lab, she explored Wyoming, especially hiking the surrounding parks and trails!

Throwback to last summer! Photos from the GHIP Nepal site with students Abby Childress (Idaho), James Phillips (Seattle), and Heidi Taggart (Wyoming). GHIP is the Global Health Immersion Program, and these students spent their summer completing the academic Triple I requirement of medical school in Dhulikhel, Nepal.

Medicine happens as part of a team, so seeing this kind of collaboration is fantastic! Reposted from Washington Students for Community Health (WSCH) is a joint interest group with students from WSU College of Medicine in Spokane that aims to promote health equity and social justice through community engagement. Recently, WSCH established a pop-up library at the Trent Resource and Assistance Center (TRAC), Spokane’s largest shelter, to provide community members facing homelessness with help navigating essential services such as getting an ID and setting up doctors appointments. So far the response from the TRAC community has been incredible and we look forward to learning more ways we can support our community!

Love reading about student success stories! Reposted from Training to become a physician and training for an Ironman is one in the same for MS2 Sean O’Shea.
During his first year in medical school, Sean trained for and competed in Ironman Ireland Cork and Ironman 70.3 Washington.
Not only has his performance qualified him for the 2024 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand, but it has also furthered a partnership with an organization that has had an enormous impact on his family.
Sean’s first experience with healthcare was when he accompanied his brother, who lives with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to appointments to help him communicate, write, and socialize.
These services were provided by Easterseals, who, since 1919, have helped individuals with disabilities gain the necessary skills to live fulfilling and independent lives.
Living with a brother with ASD taught Sean to be a caregiver and motivated him to pursue a career in healthcare.
In Sean’s words, “There’s no other group [Easterseals] that I’d rather represent in my future athletic and professional career, and I can’t wait to see the impact that we can have in the years to come!”

These are helpful tips! Reposted from Unfortunately, sometimes scammers try to take advantage of college students looking for scholarships. They make false promises of grants or scholarships and ask for upfront fees that never lead to funds.
They might claim you have won a scholarship but need to pay a one-time “processing fee” or pressure you into applying for a “guaranteed” scholarship with an application fee. Sadly, you end up paying but never receiving the promised money.
