Dive into the incredible life cycle of salmon! These resilient fish begin their journey in the freshwater streams and rivers of King County, where they hatch from eggs laid in gravel nests. Young salmon spend time feeding and growing in freshwater then begin their migration to Puget Sound. Once in the saltwater, they mature into adult salmon, spending years feeding and growing.
But their journey doesn't end there. When it's time to spawn, adult salmon return to their natal streams, guided by their remarkable sense of smell. This homing instinct ensures they return to the right waters to spawn and complete the cycle. This journey isn't just a natural wonder; it's crucial for our ecosystem. Salmon transfer ocean nutrients to rivers and streams, enriching the ecosystems and supporting diverse food chains. Their journey also provides a vital food source for people and predators, including the iconic orcas of the Salish Sea.

No need to “fish” for a great companion – here’s Dolphin, our Pet of the Week!
Dolphin is an orange tabby cat that is just about a year old. He was brought in to the Pet Adoption Center in late May by one of our animal control officers.
This spunky boy is very affectionate, and would be thrilled to cuddle up with you at home. He does like to do his own thing at times, so his people will need to know when to give him some alone time too.
Dolphin seems to get along well with other cats, but as always a slow and careful introduction to other kitties in his new home is recommended. He will need time to acclimate to his new environment at his own pace. Once he gets to know you, Dolphin will be a very devoted friend!
“Swim” on over to the Pet Adoption Center soon to meet Dolphin! He is neutered, litterbox trained, current on vaccinations, and microchipped. His adoption comes with many benefits, including 30 days of opt-in pet health insurance through Trupanion. Since he’s our Pet of the Week, Dolphin’s adoption fee is reduced, though a pet license fee may still apply. Learn about all the benefits that come with a pet license at kingcounty.gov/LicenseMyPet
We’ve got tons of furry friends waiting to go home with you! The King County Pet Adoption Center is located at 21615 64th Ave. S. in Kent. Walk-in adoption hours are noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. weekends. All of our adoptable pets can be seen on our website at kingcounty.gov/AdoptAPet. If you have questions, contact RASKC at 206-296-7387 (PETS) or [email protected]
