Starting this month, all tenants at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport who provide food service must now use only reusable or approved compostable food service ware and packaging. This new requirement now eliminates plastic and plastic-lined service ware in favor of certified compostable alternatives. The initiative will help capture more food waste for composting, ease sorting confusion for travelers, and prevent food-contaminated products from ending up in the wrong place. https://www.portseattle.org/news/sea-moves-all-reusable-or-compostable-food-service-materials

Major construction has begun on the Maritime Innovation Center on the grounds of Fishermen's Terminal. The historic Ship Supply Building, constructed in 1916, will be modernized into a 15,000 square foot facility featuring work, fabrication, and event space for new business incubators and anchor tenants. This beautiful and modern facility will be on the cutting-edge of sustainability. This week was the 75th anniversary of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on July 9. The celebrations began on Tuesday when Commissioners introduced a proclamation recognizing this major milestone. Festivities continued throughout the week with activations for travelers at the airport, a gathering for our tenant and community partners, and recognition events for airport staff. This Saturday, July 13, we’ll celebrate at The Museum of Flight with a screening of our airport mini-documentaries and an aviation panel featuring current and former airport directors. Lastly, we’ll be at the annual Olde Burien Block Party hosted by Discover Burien on July 20. Our Port of Seattle Police and Fire departments will be joining us and there will be lots of family-friendly activities.

Now in its 25th year of cruises between Seattle and Alaska, cruise tourism has become a significant part of the local economy, contributing to hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs, and bringing nearly $900 million to the region in economic impact, bolstering small, local businesses like Seattle-based Jamie Slye Hats + Accessories.

Over the 2023 and 2024 Alaska cruise seasons, Slye forged new connections that have boosted her business. Many cruise passengers found their way into her shop before or after their cruise, and she secured a partnership with Holland America Line to bring her hats into its Denali National Park shops in Alaska.

Traditionally, hat shops like Slye’s are a destination for people who have researched the shop in advance. But Slye said tourists and cruise passengers have resulted in another type of customer. “A lot of people just walking past were very surprised to see a hat shop, and also were very happy to see one because they realized that they would actually be able to use a hat for their travels,” Slye said. SEA Leads the Transition to PFAS-free Firefighting Foam at Airports Nationwide 07/02/2024

Work is underway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to be the first airport in the nation to use a special cleaning technology that more fully removes foam containing PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from airport fire trucks and replace it with new fluorine-free foam. All five of SEA’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles are expected to be ready with the new product by mid-July.

The Port of Seattle Fire Department has been a national leader pressing for the transition away from PFAS foam. Since 2018, the Port has worked diligently with local, state, and national partners to bring attention to the need for replacement.
