Did you know that through the north2north mobility program, students at UArctic partner institutions can study abroad to learn more about Northern and Arctic issues?
UW will welcome Icelandic student Haukur Brynjarsson for fall quarter:
"My name is Haukur and I am a 23-year-old Media and Communications student from a small town in the north of Iceland. I have always wanted to study abroad and when I heard about an opportunity to come to UW, I was quick to act. My academic interests have mostly to do with media, communications, politics and global perspectives. And also, being from a country close to the Arctic circle, issues related to the Arctic obviously have play a big role in all of those. I am very excited to begin my journey in Seattle and create the best of memories at UW."

This summer Jaskwaan Bedard taught the Haida language to one of our Foreign Language and Area Studies fellows, Ric Berkholtz (UW Law School). Jaskwaan reflects her on the meaning of language for Indigenous Peoples.
"Community efforts to strengthen X̱aad Kil, the Massett dialect of the Haida language, is part of a larger narrative of Indigenous resurgence and empowerment. Much like the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii, the expertise and language authority lay in the hands of the Haida people, a line unbroken for millenia. It is a colonial misperception that through Western academia, one can gain more knowledge about a subject versus a lived experience steeped in values and protocols. However, it is true that the academic experience can offer tools to help Indigenous language learners along the way. When knowledge transfer is done within the boundaries of our Indigenous laws, in this case the Haida law of Yahgudang - a rich and layered way of being around reciprocal respect, where along with learning about the language we learn about social justice issues that cannot be separated from any Indigenous language learning experience. Although for decades and in some case longer, Indigenous peoples have had outside determinants define the health of language and community, it is important that I state here that although there are very few first language speakers of X̱aad kil, there is a growing movement of learners who speak our language every day, with intention and most importantly, with yahgudang."
Yahgudanggang - Respectfully,
Jasḵwaan Bedard

Great mini interview about the role of Indigenous Peoples on the Arctic Council.
Janessa Chinana (Sangaalh Staastas Haida) - Jackson School doctoral candidate - was awarded at Dissertation Innovation Fellowship from the Mellon/American Council of Learned Societies for her project: “Xaadláa Gwáay.yaay: Indigenous Border Nationhood and Haida Governance Across Settler-States [Canada and the United States].” The fellowship is for the 2023-24 academic year.
The abstract for her project reads:
“Indigenous nationhood is rarely a topic in international discourse. Looking at the Haida nation, obscured by settler-colonialism, separated by the U.S./Canada Border, this work supports the Indigenous Nationhood movement and brings greater understanding to the concept of Indigenous internationalism. Exploring intricate relationships to land and to each other through photography and community biography, this work contributes to a better understanding of Indigenous nationhood and governance in borderlands. Through Indigenous methodologies and protocols for research, this project conveys less-heard perspectives of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous nationhood movements and resurgence. This work challenges colonial structures that continue to dispossess Indigenous peoples.”
Janessa was also in the first cohort of Haida language learners offered by the Canadian Studies Center at the UW. In Summer 2022 and for the 2022-23 academic year Janessa was awarded two Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships for the X̱aad Kíl (Haida) language. “As a Haida mother and scholar,” Janessa noted, “learning my native language— Xaad kíl—is essential to reconnecting with my history and community, restoring Haida nationhood, and defending our land and water.”
Janessa was raised in Kaigani (Alaskan) Haida village of Hydaburg, Alaska. She has a master’s in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria (2018).
Congratulations Janessa!!!
