• arts and culture; public art; and
• future planning efforts

OPINION: Too much of the discussion about Seattle’s proposed upzone for the University District has focused on only part of the proposal, missing many of the benefits, writes guest columnist Rick Mohler. The plan proposes a balance between growth, livability, affordability and sustainable urbanism.

U District Conversation on Homelessness
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, December 7th, 9:30 – 11:00am.
LOCATION: at University Congregational Church, 4515 16th Ave NE, Seattle. first floor chapel.
To all our UDCH attendees: DON’T MISS OUR DECEMBER GATHERING!
Here are TWO REASONS: Homelessness is on everybody’s mind, at every level. And, Tent City 3 is coming to the UW on December 17, for 90 days! We have invited some key people, from every level, to keep us informed and able to be effective as events unfold.
We’ll hear from:
** A representative (or two) from Tent City 3 will join us to answer questions and explain what to expect.
** Theresa Doherty, Senior Project Director for the UW Campus Master Plan, brings a very U District perspective.
** And Nicole Macri, newly-elected Representative from the 43rd Legislative District, will help us get ready for the State Legislative Session that opens on January 9, and runs for 109 days.
Bring your questions, your thoughts, and your own community perspectives. It should be a very lively – and most informative – 90 minutes.

Response on behalf of Theresa Doherty, Senior Project Director of the UW Seattle Campus Master Plan:
There is no plan to do away with the climbing rock on the UW campus. The Campus Master Plan identifies 85 development sites - twice as many potential development sites than the UW expects to use during the life of the plan in order to allow for flexibility in meeting space needs identified over time. About half of the 85 sites would be needed to address the University’s growth needs. For any development site that is chosen, and where there is an existing facility, such as the climbing rock, the UW’s process for addressing existing uses includes considering feasible options such as incorporating existing uses to replacing existing uses on site or elsewhere on campus as well as shifting the footprint of a potential development site to accommodate both the existing use and the new building.
