One of our own! Congrats Marin McKee!
This year, we are thrilled to spotlight an exceptional candidate whose passion for the Arabian horse breed, dedication to community service, and commitment to fostering unity within the industry have truly set her apart. It is with great honor that we introduce the outstanding youth from Region 5, Marin McKee.
Marin, a student at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana, is pursuing her passion within the Equine Program and shining as a valuable member of the Intercollegiate Equestrian Team. Her compassion, humility, and unwavering motivation serve as the foundation of her approach to life.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Marin has actively contributed to her high school volleyball team, lending a helping hand to the middle school team during their season. Her involvement in various community service projects and dedication to tutoring at her high school highlights her commitment to making a positive impact.
Notably, Marin has been a vital part of the Arabian Horse Youth Association, where she served two years as the AHYA Vice President. In Region 5, she introduced the Are U Okay? Program by creating kindness boards at shows and played a crucial role in organizing and running youth activities. Her support in ensuring a smooth transition for the new Director showcases her leadership and dedication to the Arabian horse community.
For her outstanding attributes, passion for excellence, and unwavering support of the Arabian horse, Marin McKee is our esteemed Youth of the Year. We are delighted to present her with the Youth of the Year perpetual trophy, along with a $5000 scholarship sponsored by the Arabian Horse Foundation.
Join us in congratulating Marin McKee, your 2023 Youth of the Year! 🌟

Follow-on to Leveling: Next piece of food for thought. If you are out of Select in ANY discipline you should be out in ALL discplines. This sounds reasonable since the purpose of Select category is to help people get started in showing. HOWEVER, in my own experience, I am an upper level rider in Saddleseat. I do not ride Hunters, and have really not done much Western. I am currently considered Select in Hunter and Western. Is that fair? I think so, because I sucked when I tried western. I think going between the disciplines is difficult for most of us Amateur riders. I believe the way it is split by discipline currently is wise, as I would like to see many who has not ridden in Saddleseat, try to compete with the Choice and Elite when coming from a different discipline. You have the difference of gear, types of horse, seat, four reins vs one hand, there is a lot to learn. Jut like it was difficult to go from Saddleseat to Western. Everything is different. Again, more food for thought.
Wanted to throw a few "devils Advocate" comments out here. There has been quite a bit of discussion about refining the rules to define the Leveling categories, and mostly the Select Level. I originally commented that no one who has ever been considered a non-amateur or pro should ever be allowed to ride Select. I take that back. A few scenarios to think about. 1) A young man in our area, never rode, he only showed halter at the local level. His mom renewed his memberships when he turned 18, she did not know to select the "amateur" button when she renewed his cards. He went to show in an amateur class and was denied as he was now considered a pro. He had to file petitions to USEF, as well as provide letters from upstanding members verifying he was NOT a professional to get his amatuer status back. If we changed the rule so Non-Amatuers could NEVER be Select, would it be fair to this person who has never really ridden and never shown under saddle, and who was declared a professional by mistake? 2) A young lady in our area showed as a child in the open shows. She showed a few times Class "A" as a young adult. She made the mistake of letting a trainer pay her for a couple of rides on a young horse when the trainer was injured. Later the trainer got mad at her and tried to prevent her from riding amateur. She had to appeal to USEF to get her amateur status back, again, getting letters of reference and proving that she was not accepting money for riding horses. PLUS they verified she had not been in the show ring for over 10 years. during that brief time, she was not considered an amateur, but she never showed either. So now 20 years later, she would like to try her hand at showing again. Would it be fair to this person to be prevented from showing Select? Just some food for thought that I had not thought about when I made my original comment. IF we do decide to make a blanket decision that no one who has EVER been a non-amateur should be banned from showing Select, we need to have an appeal process in place for things like this. On the other hand, I like to look at various trainers show records to see how they have done. I was shocked to see that many trainers, with many clients past and present, only have enough points to be select themselves in many disciplines. I was surprised. However, they are being paid to train multiple disciplines, so if they went amateur, should they be allowed to compete in Select? I think not, even if their show record was not good enough to get them out of Select. So what is the good balance here? In my mind, examples 1 and 2, should be allowed to show select, but the third one, who has been training for pay for years, despite having a poor show record, I feel should not be allowed to be select if they regained their amateur status.
