Good morning! This just in from Atania Gilmore, of the Wednesday and Saturday morning Farmers' Market!
"AARP will have a presence at the market this Wednesday. Hoping you can help me spread the news. In addition to listening activities and sharing resources for seniors, they are planning on giving out 'cooling kits'.
BTW Market is doing very well this season! We have invested in A-frame signs to put up thru the neighborhood and I'm hearing they are getting noticed and drawing folks in." Please stop by the park and enjoy local fare!

Good morning! Notes from the Farmers' Market, opening soon in Coeur d'Alene Park, Brownes' Addition:

I have attached notes on a couple of programs I am hoping you can share with the neighborhood. These are nutrition programs funded by federal/state and local (carrot cash) that provide for equitable access to fresh food.

For the SENIOR FMNP We can sign up seniors right at the booth, last year qualifying seniors received their cards quickly.
The Market match/Carrot cash is an excellent program that stretches EBT dollars by giving 'cash' that can be used to purchase fruit and veggies. The government provides for up to $25, we are raising it an add'l $15 until our funds run out.

A couple of other programs that we will be offering:

KERNEL Kids eating right and nutrition and exercise for life, funded by Catholic Charities.
We will have a booth from the last week of June thru the end of August. Any interested kids do an activity and are rewarded with a $2 Kernel Cash to spend on fruits/veggies. Vendors usually have something that they offer specifically for this.

SUN BUCKS this is a summer EBT program with cards given out to school age children that are on reduced/free lunch programs. The card is pre-loaded with $120, and we can match up to $25 each visit with additional dollars to purchase fruit/veg. These will be going out the end of the school year.
Thanks for any help spreading the word!

Parks & Recreation 02/06/2024

The City is reaching out to let you, the friends of CDA Park, and the Browne's Addition neighborhood know the work to install the new irrigation system within CDA Park will begin 02/07/24.

The crew will begin installing the larger piping within the middle of the park, working from the north end southward. Once the larger piping is installed, they will begin installing the many smaller lines which connect to each individual sprinkler head. The crew will also trench / coordinate install of the electric conduit to the bandstand as a part of this work.

The current plan is to fully complete the north half of the park before beginning work in the southern half of the park. This is intended to minimize the amount of disturbance within the park at one time and will allow the caretaker to manually water the southern
half of the park normally for as long as possible. It will also leave a good portion of the park undisturbed while work is ongoing, so neighbors can continue to enjoy the park with as little disruption as possible.

Please feel free to use the park; we ask that neighbors avoid the immediate vicinity around the workers. We have asked that they backfill or tape off trenches daily to limit the potential for open excavation within the park in the evenings after they leave.

Once completed, the new automated system will be capable of fully watering the park during the evenings and will free up labor resources which can be spent performing more desired maintenance (litter pickup / restroom cleaning / etc.).

Would you mind sharing this information with the neighbors? As always, if you have any questions or comments, please
let me or Al know.

Ok, Browne's Addition neighbors! At last night's BA Council meeting, the City's rep said that Browne's is to be totally plowed TOMORROW, Saturday, starting at 7 a.m.
This is short notice, I know, but they're going to try to complete our streets in one day. Please try to move as many cars as possible off the street. Our council has asked that, in future, Browne's be plowed on a weekday, as parking is crowded more on Saturdays and Sundays. Of course, they can't guarantee that, depending on when snow falls, but the rep said they'd take it into consideration. Meanwhile, coffee shops open at 7, and Frank's opens at 6. Tomorrow might be a good day to drive to breakfast!

As temperatures dip, the community is reminded to access various community resources to stay warm. Beginning Wednesday, and likely for the following few days, people can access the regional shelter system and City Library locations.

Shelter providers throughout the region are encouraged to continue providing space to those who need it up to their capacity. Shelter space availability is reported by providers at sheltermespokane.org, where resources are also listed. Providers are prepared to communicate within their network to utilize all available space and resources.
Overflow capacity will be available at the Trent Resource and Assistance Center on an as-needed basis with connectivity to other available system space as a first option when temperatures are predicted by the National Weather Service to be 32 degrees or lower and designated low-barrier shelter space was at 90 percent or greater during the previous night. The network of resources is available to anyone who needs a place to stay warm regardless of their housing situation.
“Spokane works together in times of need and our regional partners are coming together to do what they can to bring people indoors and connect them to services,” Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward said.

Recent improvements to the shelter system have included completion of a year-long remodel of the Volunteers of America’s Young Adult Shelter serving 18- to 24-year-olds with embedded behavioral health services that allows it to become a 24-7 facility and a pending move of VOA’s Crosswalk Youth Center for 13- to 17-year-olds from downtown to near Spokane Community College where educational opportunities await.
The Spokane Fire and Police departments along with Park Rangers will check on at-risk groups during the extreme cold and advise them of community resources.

The City continues to monitor National Weather Service Spokane data and will respond according to the level of severity designated in its Emergency Management protocols as
