Hilltop - One of Tacoma’s Oldest Neighorhoods

Throughout Tacoma’s history, the Hilltop has often been the first home to newcomers from other parts of American and many other countries. The result is a diverse neighborhood with old-world buildings with a close-knit atmosphere. Hilltop Action Coalition has been a part of that history for over 25 years helping our local community grow and thrive.

The Hilltop Action Coalition focuses primarily on empowering and assisting residents to effectively improve life in their community by acting as the communications anchor for the Hilltop area. Our grass-roots community leaders participate together in monthly meetings to exchange their experiences, to sharpen their leadership skills, and to be informed of the resources available from the Coalition, the Tacoma Police Department, the City of Tacoma and other community partners.

The Hilltop Action Coalition also helps departments of the City of Tacoma better understand how they can serve residents of the Hilltop. Community-based policing, drug-house elimination, lighting, and waste clean-ups have all been part of this effort.

As economic development in the area increases in response to rapid growth in the nearby downtown and university districts, Hilltop is facing gentrification, rising housing costs and an influx of new residents as urban development increases along the route of the link rail extension. The Hilltop Action Coalition is leading the way for community to create spaces for learning about new opportunities, championing for advocacy and policy to support those ideas and connecting residents and anchor institutions together in effective partnerships that allow existing community to participate and benefit from the exciting and at times disconcerting pace of economic development and growth.

We invite you to contact us directly and also join us on the third Monday of each month at our monthly community meeting to learn more.
