It is the energy of these winds that I used, when I came to these shores, obsessed, followed by my home-made furies, errynies, and such potent creatures. And I fell in love with the immense blue eyes of the Pacific: I saw is red algae, its blood-colored cliffs, its pulsating breath. The ocean led me to the mountain.

Once I was asked in front of a television camera: “Who is the most important person you ever met?” and I remember answering: “A mountain.” I thus discovered that Tamalpais was at the very center of my being.”

I will never forget discovering the writing of Etel Adnan, Journey to Mt Tamalpais (https://www.themarginalian.org/2019/02/06/etel-adnan-journey-to-mount-tamalpais/ ) and feeling that her beautiful writings of her life lived at the base of Mt Tam were part of me, too. I have had the sacred privilege to work to protect and manage daily, the wildlands parks and wilderness of Mare Island Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve and Mare Island San Pablo Bay Trail and the San Pablo Bay Baylands Delta for the past 30 years and more. Before that, I lived briefly in her shadow. Thank you Drew and Elizabeth Wattles for the birthday gift of Etel Adnan’s beautiful book, Journey to Mt. Tamalpais. And, thank you for another sunny evening sunset ramble in her midst. ❤️

Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) | Caltrans State of California

CA DOT is planning to update or possibly entirely replace Highway 37 in the next few years. As you know this is our only road access ( you can also access our property via the slough that runs along the north edge if our property, which is a public waterway) . Please see the attached link for more info and PLEASE FILL OUT AND SUBMIT THE SURVEY - tell CA DOT:

KEEP THE CURRENT HIGHWAY 37 AS AN ACCESS ROAD!!!!

Interesting historical tidbit: private access from our property to the edge of San Pablo Bay was written into the original deed of our property; the construction of HWY 37 many years later cut off this access. Later, the introduction of the concrete divider onto HWY 37 further complicated our road access, removing our ability to directly turn east from our driveway onto HWY 37 - or turn into our driveway when traveling eastbound. CA DOT has not yet decided what they will do to improve the current highway, but every proposal we have seen includes imposing a toll and blocking or removing our access further.
