Peace Through Strength - Mare Island Historic Park Foundation volunteers work to ensure the USS MARIANO G. VALLEJO (SSBN 658) memorial is properly maintained and preserved in shipyard Historic District. In addition to power washing the sail, they installed the chain barriers shown to prevent skateboarders from continuing the damage they have inflicted on the monument ever since it was first dedicated in 2019. This submarine was built where the sail memorial now stands, and she served as a key deterrent component of the Nuclear Triad that won the Cold War. The sail of the submarine is the tower-like structure found on the dorsal surface of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. It housed the conning tower, the periscope, radar and communications masts, and the fairwater planes. The fairwater planes primarily controlled the depth of the submarine’s bow and the stern planes (near the rudder) which controlled the angle or “pitch” to assist in the process of submerging or surfacing the boat.

Lifting the Veil
Following World War II, the nuclear genie was out of the bottle and conflict between avowed enemies and superpowers threatened the survival of civilization. Our country adopted a strategy that carried the highest military priority to counter this existential threat. The Cold War has now ended, the players have changed, and more nuclear armed countries have stepped on the stage, but the strategy of the Cold War remains unchanged. That strategy to counter nuclear war is the strategy of mutually assured destruction.
Join the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation and Master Chief Bill Linné USN (Ret) for “The Cold War: Mare Island’s Secret War Beneath the Waves.” You will hear him lift the veil on living and serving during this tense period when Mare Island played a crucial role in countering and defeating the Soviet threat. Master Chief Linné served through the height of the Cold War on nuclear-powered submarines and in Mare Island’s Ocean Engineering Program.
When: Sunday March 3, 2024, 3 PM
Where: Saint Peter’s Chapel, Mare Island
For Tickets: Visit https://www.mihpf.org/store/old-84 or scan the QR code.
Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door (space permitting). Mare Island Historic Park Foundation members are free. All proceeds to benefit the Foundation.
Moments From Launch
The USS Mariano G Vallejo (SSBN-658) sits moments away from launch on Mare Island’s building ways. The sail of the submarine can be seen at center in this photo prior to its journey of hundreds of thousands of miles beneath the oceans of the world as part of the US Navy’s nuclear deterrent forces. That sail is now back in this same location as a permanent memorial to those who built, manned and serviced these important ships. Visit the building ways and imagine the sail atop this giant ship in comparison to the crane gantries you see on the left and right in this photograph. There is no better way to gain an appreciation for the massive scale of the ballistic missile submarines that were built and launched here.
Watch our web page at.http://www.mihpf.org for tickets to go on sale for the next in our speaker’s series that will occur on March 3, 2024, at 3pm. You will hear Master Chief Bill Linne’, USN, Retired walk us back to a time when the ballistic missile submarine first became our Nation’s most important strategic asset. He will describe life aboard one of the most complex and lethal weapons systems on the face of the earth during a time when the great nuclear powers stood toe to toe as avowed enemies.
