Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) is an annual event that promotes awareness and seeks to advance and improve Black maternal health outcomes across the country.

"The movement for Black lives has to start before birth because there are forces working against us before we are born. In addition to demanding systemic change, for us to truly make a difference, we need to empower birthing people along the childbearing continuum with resources, guidance and advocacy tools to support their birth village and the larger community.”

Black Woman Ain't Suppose To Be Afraid...

There’s no single solution to the fact that black pregnant people are dying at three to four times the rate as white ones and that around 60 percent of all pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. (These numbers don’t even encompass the black people who are injured or traumatized in birth.)

According to NIH, the Doula-assisted birthing parent is four times less likely to have a low birth weight baby, two times less likely to experience a birth complication involving themselves or their baby, and significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) has endorsed increased use of doulas as “one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes.” The March of Dimes highlights a number of research-backed benefits from having a doula, including shorter duration of labor, reduced C-section rates, fewer “low” Apgar scores, lower rates of preterm birth and low weight births, and impacts on the experience itself, including reduced negative feelings about childbirth.

Doulas are aware of what’s going on with the birthing families in their communities. They see which clients are struggling to be heard by doctors. They see which families are traumatized by past experiences. They push for legislation, insurance expansion, better access to their services, and cultural changes that will support parents and babies in their communities.

Doulas are an ESSENTIAL part of your birth team.

Types of Doulas

Doulas are trained professionals that assist mothers before, during, and after childbirth. They make sure that mothers achieve a healthy and satisfying pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum experience by providing physical and emotional support, as well as helpful information that they need.

With the wide scope of practice, there are different types of doulas to help you with your particular needs:

Labor and Birth Doula
They guide the mother and family through the entire labor and birthing. They create a safe and nurturing environment for childbirth to be a truly satisfying experience. They keep the birthing parent and partner informed of changes and options.

Post-Partum Doula
They assist new moms having a difficult time adjusting to the stresses of a newborn, breastfeeding, sleepless nights, other children, and postpartum concerns. They help by giving the family strategies like creating a parental plan, keeping a log, cooking, light cleaning, and help mom cope with stressors.

Full Spectrum Doula
A full spectrum doula focuses not just on childbirth3qszfd but covers the entire spectrum of pregnancy outcomes. They provide support including on miscarriage, planned abortion, stillbirth, or adoption.

Bereavement Doula
A bereavement or “loss doula” is the one who supports and helps families who are experiencing the loss of their baby, whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or a diagnosis that means the baby will not live long after being delivered.

Abortion Doula
An abortion doula is a person who is able to emotionally and physically support someone through and after the process of an abortion.

Happy
It's baby time! Been on duty for over 12 hours.

It is an honor to be invited into the sacred space of birthing. Each time I am invited by another family to be a part of their birth or postpartum, I am so grateful for the opportunity to help make that experience of welcoming their child to be as positive as possible.

The fact that people are reluctant to invest much time and/or money is preparing for their birth is a reflection of the low value our culture places on motherhood, and of a lack of understanding of the impact that birth has on women, and on society as a whole.

The benefits of doula support are well documented and supported by a wealth of evidence. Making a doula a priority means making yourself a priority.

Let’s talk labor positions!

Making sure that you remain moving through labor is an evidence based way to help labor progress. Different positions can allow gravity to to create progress, help widen your pelvis, it can help provide relief and make birth waves more effective or low discomfort. The freedom to move allows you to listen and respond to your body’s cues.

Can you spot the different labor positions in the photos? Different labor positions can be but are not limited to:

💕 Standing in the shower

💕 Standing squat

💕 Partner support

💕 Rebozo Method

💕 Sitting on a birthing ball or a chair

💕 Side laying

💕 Laboring in a body of water

💕 Kneeling

💕 Hands & Knees

We’re you able to move during your birthing time and listen to your body’s cues? What was the most effective labor position for you?
