Organized in 1802 as “a spiritual home for Baptists moving to the new federal city,” the First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C., has been welcoming believers from across the country and around the world ever since. While we maintain a steadfast commitment to the historic Baptist principles of individual freedom, congregational autonomy, and religious liberty, our tradition of hospita
Staff Christmas Greeting 2023
Christmas Eve @ 4:00 pm🎄
“And Mary gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger…” Celebrate Christmas Eve with First Baptist Church. Worship includes Christmas carols, the music of choir, organ, brass, holy communion, and a Christmas Eve meditation from Pastor Julie. The service ends with the lighting of congregational candles.
Today in worship, we continue the Advent series, Those Who Dream. Pastor Julie preaches the message “Those Who Dream Sow Joy” from Luke 1:46-55 in which Mary’s song of praise calls us to rejoice in the coming birth of the Savior. Lectionary texts are Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24.
Ultimately, dreams sow joy, even if that joy doesn’t immediately spring forth. Sowing seeds into the soil always feels risky and feeble—how can something so small become something so beautiful, so big, and so nourishing? Like Mary, we are called to tend and nurture the dreams God has woven into us.
This Sunday, December 17 | 4:00 pm
The holidays are marked by celebrations, yet they are often stressful or sad for those experiencing grief of any kind, especially the death of loved ones in the last year. Join us on Sunday, December 18 at 4:00 p.m. for Blue Christmas: A Service of Consolation.
Let the music of the Chancel Choir, the comforting words of Scripture and poetry, and words of hope from Pastor Julie bring peace to your tired soul. The service concludes with the lighting of candles in memory of people who have died, and/or in acknowledgment of other kinds of grief we carry. Please consider inviting and accompanying someone you know who needs some comfort and hope this year.
Our congregation is glad to be a member of Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists. As we say every Sunday, “No matter who you are, and no matter where you find yourself on the journey of faith in life, you are welcome here.”
On this Giving Tuesday, First Baptist is grateful for the gifts that have enabled our worship and witness in the heart of Washington for more than 221 years. You can empower our next century (or two) with a gift today.

First Baptist joins in mourning the passing of our sister, Rosalynn Carter. Her work on behalf of mental health benefited millions of people. Her partnership with Jimmy Carter was a model of sharing, whether she was at his side in Africa, swinging a hammer on a new home or being first to find the Bible text when he taught Sunday School. God bless you, Rosalynn, and thank you.
First Baptist DC is praying for the comfort and peace of our sister and friend, Rosalynn Carter, who has entered hospice care. Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter were beloved members of this church family while they were in the White House, and we cherish their lives as servants of God.
Jan Kraybill performs free at 4pm on Sunday, November 12 at FBCDC in the 2023 Dr. Lawrence P. Schreiber Organ Recital.
The recital is entitled, “A Community of Voices.” Dr. Kraybill writes: “Each of the pipes in an organ can speak at only one pitch, one volume, and one tone color. Differences in pipes’ sizes, shapes, and materials create varied sounds—each one is unique. By definition, then, a pipe organ is a community of voices.
This program is designed to celebrate the rich variety of voices in this Austin pipe organ.” Musical selections are from well-known composers such as Bach, Gounod, Sibelius, and Widor as well as contemporary composers: Gunnar Idenstam, Mary Beth Bennett, Geoffrey Wilcken and Ralph Simpson.
The recital is free and open to the public.

This Sunday, November 5, First Baptist honors that “great cloud of witnesses” who have gone before us, remembering the loved ones who died in the past year and on whose broad shoulders we stand. All are welcome to reflect and pray with us.
