Unity is in part recognizing that all our fates our interconnected, interwoven with one another as humans. What we do to each other, we do to ourselves. But we must learn to recognize our unity, our community, extends beyond humans, but also with the natural world, and indeed, with all of Creation.

Sept 8th is a day when we gather together to celebrate our unity as one family. And even with all our many differences, to demonstrate that we are fully capable not just of coexisting peaceably together, but of reveling in our abundant and beautiful diversity.

Unity makes up the word “community.” - The Unity Walk is only 2 Days Away!

My friend John Perkins once shared with me a story about an old shaman he had brought to NYC so that people from our world would be exposed to his wisdom. This Shaman had never been out of his Amazonian village and had lived his life only clad in loin cloth. When he arrived in NYC, John took him for a walk. The shaman, walking silently and barefooted, would stop once in a while and tenderly touch a building, and mutter something under his breath. He had a very sad look on his face when they returned from their walk, and when John asked him why, the old Shaman said this. The buildings had shared with him how lonely they were. Didn’t the denizen of NYC not know that these buildings were made of Mother Earth? Why were they not being treated with more care, gratitude, and deference?

Next time you are taking a walk outside, even if it’s rushed going from the metro to work – anywhere where you are encountering strangers – consider it an opportunity to slow down and adopt a "well-wisher" mindset. Genuinely think caring thoughts of loving-kindness about each person you see as you walk. So, each time you are approaching a passerby, feel in your heart, smile with your eyes, and recite this seven-word mantra: "I wish for you to be happy."

Research shows that if you do this, you yourself will become happier and less anxious, feel more empathetic and connected.

Register Today for the Unity Walk! Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, or $5 (students, seniors, and those of limited income): https://givebutter.com/ZAEEuo

To have unity, we must heal the wounds that keep us apart. And we first begin by healing our relationship with ourselves.

We do so by recognizing that we are so much more than the limited identities we have assumed. We typically identify ourselves according to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality and religion. But we have forgotten our most fundamental identity as part of universal spirit, that we are divine emanations and are united as one human race.

So, I’m asking you to feel into this now: Who are you if you’re not a particular gender, a race, an ethnicity, a nationality or a religion?

The theme of this year’s Unity Walk is “healing.” To have unity, we must heal the wounds that keep us hurt, sad, angry, and apart. But part of healing is also placing attention on where we wish to end up – what could being healed and whole look like, feel like? How would it look and feel for our communities to be healed and whole? Who would you need to become to live that future vision?

To everyone commemorating Ashura, we wish you a reflective observance.

Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic lunar calendar, is a significant observance with varying meanings across Muslim traditions. Shi'a Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Sunni Muslims remember the day when Prophet Musa was saved by Allah from Pharaoh's army. Observances often include fasting and prayer among many Muslims.

In observance of the Martyrdom of the Báb, wishing all a reflective day.

The Martyrdom of the Báb is a Baha'i holy day that honors the ex*****on of the religion's co-founder, the Báb, in 1850. The Báb, meaning "Gate" in Arabic, was a messenger who prepared the way for Baha'u'llah, the latest Manifestation of God. Bahá'ís remember this day with prayers and scripture, including the Tablets of Visitation

About Us

Created in 1978, the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington (IFC) brings together eleven historic faith communities to promote dialogue, understanding and a sense of community and to work cooperatively for justice throughout the DC region.

IFC members currently include the Baha’i, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Jain, Jewish, Latter-day Saints, Protestant, Roman Catholic, Sikh and Zoroastrian faith communities. We work towards creating a just community through coalition-building, education, training and advocacy; by uniting diverse faith leaders to speak and act together; by publishing community resources; and by holding public events including concerts, award ceremonies, lectures, and public dialogues.
